This is the second occurrence on my XP machine. I tried to connect to www.reuters.com and received a message that I needed to download Java to continue. I added a new tab in Chrome and deleted the message tab. I was able to go to reuters with the new tab without seeing the message.

Anyone know what's going on? I'm not going to click on download.

I used Chrome and it wasn't a redirect for me.

WDYL--If you want to disable Java (and many IT guys recommend it), go to tools menu in upper right corner, select 'settings', then select 'Show advanced settings' near bottom of list, then 'Content Settings' under Privacy. Finally check the radio box under Javascript 'Do not allow any site to run Javascript'. Click Done, then close the screen.

Java and Javascript are not the same thing.

About a year ago I went the the "Program" list and totally removed Java. Not once has it affected the usage of my laptop.
