horses breaking through the gate

even though i saw a horse bust through the gate and win the other day, you hardly ever see them in the money.

i think its very unfair for people that are at the track or betting with adw's that don't let you cancel the tickets on those horses. the horse should be an automatic scratch regardless what the vet at the gate says.

i know its a loss of revenue for the track, but it sure would look like the management would be looking out for its players should they decide to adopt that policy.

Fio Rito won the 1981 Whitney after breaking through the gate.
A member of the gate crew grabbed eh reins and denied him running off.
We made him Mr. Canandaigua that year! ;)

I think of horses that break through the gate and are reloaded without a proper opportunity to cancel wagers the same as horses that break tardily. You bet your money, and you take your chances.

Belmont - July 4th - 6th The horse was 5/2 when this happened, ended up paying $10.40 so I guess many people hit the cancel ticket button!


ENGINE a bit reluctant to load, broke through the gate prior to the start, the assistant starter doing a fine job to keep his charge in hand, was reloaded and
broke in at the start and was corrected, settled saving ground early on towards the rear, commenced a two to three wide advance under coaxing from the
three-eighths into contention swinging three wide into upper stretch, rallied to take over just outside the final furlong, drew clear under a drive to the wire.

Not only hitting cancel, but betting other runners to take advantage of the break thru. Most don't win, especially if they are speed types.

Most horses don't win period in fields larger than 2. Maybe we can start a thread where everytime a horse breaks through the gate, we can post it here and build a sample

Penn National in the last few months had at least 2 incidents that I witnessed where;

1. the horse never left the gate

2. the gate opened, but the horse started so late, you couldn't even see him
on the frontal view replay.

In neither case did they declare the horse a "non- starter",they just take your money.
No wonder younger guys would rather play poker.

If you are watching at home and see it happen, I don't know of a soul who isn't canceling their bet if it is the horse they bet on breaking through the gate.

People complain about late odds changes now, just think of what it would be like if after the race the odds on your winner drops when they declare horses non-starters for breaking poorly. Furthermore, you would be requiring the stewards to make a value judgement as to how bad a start has to be to warrant a refund, when people are already complaining left and right about the value judgements the stewards are already required to make.

You make some valid points, but these were pretty bad. I mean a Greyhound would have had a better chance than these horses.
As far as it changing the odds of the remaining horses, okay that's a problem, but if there's a late scratch, bettors are reimbursed.
This isn't happening that frequently (I don't think) that they couldn't show a little good will to the players.
