When NJ made online casino gaming legal recently, you needed wifi so they can use software to determine if you were physically located within the NJ border. I wanted to try it with my wired desktop, but they denied me access. So I bought a Netgear N300 WIFI USB adapter. Very small and plugs right into a front USB port. Takes 3 or 4 minutes to install and start using. Something like this should work well for your needs. There are faster ones for a few more bhucks too. Good luck.

Hard to believe that your home internet service could not be used to confirm where you live, even better than wifi for this I would think, but could you explain further please?

I bought the same one for a backup backup backup desktop in the house and works great.

Easy as pie and pretty cheap.

I have a stupid question-I found one at Walmart and it sets up using the Netgear Genie-How do I use the netgear Genie while trying to setup an internet connection? I wont have any internet-wireless or wired until I have the adapter?
Thanks

I've read the initial post/question, and just to be clear, are you asking about the old PC?

You say the old PC is currently hardwired. But what is your network configuration? Is the PC directly connected to the Comcast gateway via a single ethernet patch cable, or, do you have a router connected to the gateway and then your old PC is connected to the router?

If you do have a router, what is the make and model? Or, do you already know if it supports wireless connections?

This one: http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F9K1102/ ?

You should be able to add a USB WiFi device like those shown on the right side of the page at the above link where it says "related products."

Here's a way to test things using the old PC and a new USB WiFi device.

Insert the USB device into a port and let the system go through the process of discovering the new device and installing whatever drivers it might need.

Assuming the device drivers install correctly and it is ready to use, remove the ethernet patch cable between the PC and the router. See if you are still connected to the internet.

If you are still connected to the internet then the USB WiFi device is working and you are golden. At this point, if you want to move the old PC to a new room, you should be able to do so. The only caveat is local conditions might block or interfere with the WiFi signal between the router and the USB device which means once you move the PC to the new room, it might not have an internet connection. It does happen.

If, after removing the patch cable, there is not a connection to the internet, the USB connection via WiFi is not working, and, some troubleshooting needs to be done. Just reconnect the patch cable, wait a few seconds for the operating system to fix things up and you should be able to get to the internet again. However, if for some reason the connection does not automatically reconnect/heal then you will need to reboot the PC.

Netgear genie software comes with it. It sets it up for you, also shows your whole network...... lets you see what's logged on etc

I actually liked it. I didn't let it run all the time, on startup. But you can open it up when things are goofy and see what's happening.

here's a video

http://cl.netgear.com/landing/genie/default.aspx

you are making it way harder than what it is......buy one...follow the instructions.......they are pretty easy to configure....... as long as you know your network password........

Ok, read this section of Betfair's FAQ

Location Detection Plugin

What is the location detection plugin?

The location detection plugin is a piece of software downloaded within your browser which allows us to pinpoint your location using your wireless internet connection.

When do I need to install the location detection plugin?

After registering your account, you will be directed to the page where you may install the location detection plugin. If you have already completed the registration process prior to reading our FAQs, you will be prompted to install the location detection plugin when attempting to launch a game.

How do I install the location detection plugin?

You will be directed to the location detection plugin installation page once you have completed the registration process or when you are attempting to launch a game. On this page, depending on whether you are on a Windows or Mac operating system, you will need to select the relevant install button to download the plugin. Once you have successfully installed the location detection plugin you will be able to continue playing without interruptions.

Why do I need to install the location detection plugin?

By law, we must be able to confirm that you are physically located within the State of New Jersey in order to play our games. You need to install the location detection plugin in order for us to be able to confirm your location within the State.

Do I need to install the location detection plugin every time I access the site?

If you have downloaded the location detection plugin on your PC previously you will not be required to install the plugin again. If however, you are accessing Betfair Casino on a PC for the first time, you will be required to install the plugin.

How can check if the location detection plugin is installed correctly on my PC?

If you have forgotten whether or not you have installed the location detection plugin, please login to your account, select your username from the top right hand side of the site and from the dropdown menu choose the option 'Location Detection Status'. By selecting this, the site will run a check and confirm to you whether you have the location detection plugin installed or not.

I have installed the location detection plugin however I am still unable to launch a game on the site?

There could be 2 reasons why you might be unable to launch a game after installing the location detection plugin.

◾You are not physically located in New Jersey or you are very close to the state border. Areas close to the state border are designated as high risk areas by state gaming regulators.
◾You do not have a wifi adapter installed on your PC. A wifi adapter must be installed and turned on at all times in order to be able to play on our site. Betfair Casino detects your location by locating nearby wifi hotspots in order to determine that you are located in New Jersey. In order to enable us to do this, you need a wifi adapter installed and switched on.

If you don’t have a wifi adapter and need assistance, please contact our Customer Service team here.

I would think that reason that NJ/Betfair want the wifi adapter is that you can run your connection through a VPN or other ways of IP spoofing. With the wifi adapter they check all your neighbour's wifi signals and use that to determine your location.
Problem with that is if you live in the country and there are no other wifi signals close by then u are screwed.

kind of like 'triangulating' with other wifi in the immediate area, thats interesting, thanks for that. Spoofing IP is possible so makes sense there again.
