I noticed when I played Tom's video that it was the mildly expurgated version of the song where Tom T. Hall says (at the 1:06 mark) that he loves "old TV shows and snow" rather than "bourbon in a glass and grass". :)

Don't know enough but as a guess maybe Tom's version was used for some kid's TV program?

I don't know the full story, either. It could have been for the reason that you suggest. My personal guess has been that the revised version might have been done as a concession to either country stations on AM radio or the country music listening audience, who might not have been receptive to the possible interpretations put on the word "grass", especially when the song first came out in October, 1973 -- even if Tom T. was thinking of nothing but lawn greenery when he wrote the lyric (which I have no way of knowing, but which would seem out of character for him and his songwriting if he meant it the other way).

Information at the link appears to confirm your hypothesis about the lyric being re-written for a children's album. Apparently, a similar revision was made to the John Denver song "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" for the same reason, where a line was changed from "pass a pipe around" to "watch the sun go down". (We wouldn't want those kids to be getting a Rocky Mountain high, now, would we?)

Thanks for the feedback.

Interesting to see the date/time stamps on the comments are relatively recent -- not important, just interesting how things sometimes happen.

Is there a way to resize the pics to fit the screen?
