Neither a borrower nor a lender be...esp at the track!

If you need to borrow then it's time to go home
If someone asks for a loan then it's time for them to go home

I have a rule. When I lend money to someone I never expect to get it back. If I do get back, I am pleasantly surprised.

Keep in mind when loaning money the best case scenario is you get paid back....953 things can go wrong.....stories they broke etc etc etc

I thought I was slick when I was like 22.....playing in a Greek club wild games a guy who had tons of Money went empty and asked me to borrow $1000.....I thought when he got pumped up and went to AC and win 12k I'd get back my 1000 plus a 3000 bone.......make a long story short I never seen the 1000 as he thought it was just to put him in action.....however over the last 5 years when I would run into him at casino and he had money on 3 or 4 occasions he threw me a $500 chip to kick start me......

Nothing good comes out of lending cash....

Never said I don't lone out..... Usually I'll just throw my friend a c note and be done with it......

Love when the bustouts who are married who are ABC gamblers make a statement like I don't ask and I don't loan.......I just say to myself shut the **** up.....

When friends in jam and they ask me for money if I have it I give to them no questions asked (99.9 percent of time it's money to gamble)....

One time friend owes filthy bookmaker 3100.....my friend asks me to borrow the 3100 to pay him.....like 10 years ago I actually had it in my room.....I told him no....he was suprised I hung him out like that.....here's how the conversation went

Friend: rob can I borrow 3100 had a bad week betting games...

Me: no I'm not going for 3100

Friend: but rob he wants his money

Me: just don't pay him nobody else does

5 years passes

Friend: remember when I stiffed that rotten book for 3100?!?

When I was younger I got stiffed so many times by so called "Friends" that I just stopped loaning money at the track, with very few exceptions. Two that come to mind;
1. A very elderly gentleman in his mid 90's and long time friend does not have a very good memory. He arrived in the clubhouse in a very agitated state one day, and explained that when he left home he placed what he had thought was a hundred dollar bill in his wallet along with a few singles that he had. When he got there, the hundred turned out to be a ten. After paying his way in and buying a Form, he had nothing left to bet with. I offered him a C note, which he at first refused to accept, but finally did. He had a bad day, but the next week the first thing he did when he saw me was to pay me back.

2. Semi-loan, sort of, if there is such a thing. Post time, my buddy and I are both at the Sams betting the race. I make my wager, but the machine my friend is at swallows his voucher before he can get down. Now when this happens, you have to call an attendant, wait sometimes a long time before they arrive, and then wait some more untill you get your voucher back. Of course by this time the race is long over and has been declared official. Usually both of us carry another voucher in case this happens, but this time he only had the one that jamned. He asked me if I would loan him my voucher to bet with, and I did. After the race he quickly payed me back. Oh yes, neither of our horses won, but that is not part of the story.

I have made it a rule never to loan or borrow money at the track. I have never violated this rule since I started wagering on the horses many years ago.

I will loan money at the track if I am asked before the first race starts. If people ask me in the middle of the card it means they're probably chasing and I am no friend if I loan them money.

Interesting that so far, in this thread, everyone is the "lender" and not the borrower.

Any borrowers out there who have begged for money and never paid it back?

Cmon, we won't judge you. :D

Cmon, we won't judge you. :DBorrowers will never talk about it. Unless, of course, you are Donald Trump, then not only will you borrow in millions, but you will build towers and then not pay money back, but somehow talk about it as if you are smart. (which he is technically.. just not ethical).

I have nt lent to anyone at the track.. but gasp, my first time betting ever (on my newly minted ADW account), I put up $50 for my ex. Luckily we both doubled our money and some so I was potentially able to recover the 50 I loaned her. Further bets on her winnings eventually went to 0, while my part of the bankroll stayed even.
Second time around she asked me to bet for her (2-3 wks later), I asked for cash. I wasnt going to book bets and hope she pays if her horse loses and worse have to pay her if her horse wins after risking my money. Only good thing about that was that she got me into racing and I definitely enjoy it

I think Goren's rule is good, On the rare occasions I lend money, I dont expect it back. But if by chance I have had to borrow money (not for gambling though) I have always paid it back. But usually I deal more with Chase & Citi and they did suck some $$ from me in the past while getting it from the govt at 0%

"As you sow, so shall you reap"...says the good book.

So I lend money to everyone who asks me...hoping that the favor will be returned should the need arise. A gambler never knows what the future will bring...

I used to borrow and lend to my late father all the time. We always settled up and it was great. I never borrowed from anyone else. Unfortunately, I have lent money to others over the years. I'm stuck about $500. One
guy stands out though. I'll refer to him as "Dave". Dave was a personable
guy and borrowed from anybody he could. He was not so good at paying it back. One day, he was at a gas station where a female clerk was being
robbed. He stepped in and fought with the robber and got shot in the neck.
He recovered from the injuries but had affects to his neck movement.

Armed with this "hero status", Dave found a whole lot more people who
would "lend" him money. About 2 years later a friend of his came into
the simulcast room and announced "Dave passed away last week from
those injuries".

All I heard was a chorus of: "He owes me $300!!!" That SOB owes me $250!!!" "I'm out $120 bucks!!!"

I heard not one word of sympathy or sadness at his passing.

Ah horseplayers...

Back in the days before ATMs were at the track, I probably "borrowed" money three or four times when I was running short and had a larger wager I wanted to make. I'd show my friend a credit card, and say "I'll pay the damn Cash Call fee and get your dough if this nag doesn't run....."

I remember having to get the Cash Call money once.

On the other side of the coin, I've loaned out money many times to friends at the track - never very large amounts though (large being more than $200), as being a horseplayer I tended to be on a "budget". I'm down overall, as both my old buddy Herbie and my old bookie Rich from Fairmount owed me some dough when I moved down south back in 1990.

It also didn't take me long to figure out that when cashing on a race, that one needed to stay aware of the nearby "borrowers" if you didn't want to get hit up for a loan right away.....

Maybe this is along the same lines maybe not, one of my trainers other owners had zero in his horsemans book account at MP, my trainer asked if I could lend him $5350.00 to claim a horse. I did and he paid me back, minus the $350 which was the 7% NJ sales tax. It's been about 8 years since that day and I still haven't received my $!

I'll judge. Not paying back borrowed money is a character flaw.

Never been approached. Guess the degenerates can sense the answer so why even bother asking.

Played parts of both borrower and lender in this game. Overall its been a losing proposition. Home computer takes care of all that
"Hey! Good to see ya.Hows it goin? Got a hundo I can borrow?"

That kinda stuff is very far away from why I chose this path.

One of the best things about a person not paying you back is that the worlds biggest leeches probably wont be asking you again.

I once loaned two guys $100.00 each @ Roosevelt Raceway(circa 1978-79).
One guy paid me back the next night and bought me a hot dog and a drink.

The other guy to this date is still ducking behind beams, walls, poles, etc., to stay out of sight from me.
Best $100 I never got paid back. 35+ years and the leech hasnt returned. :)

PS - Always nice to see Andy C. posting about horses.

I've borrowed and loaned many times over the years. I see nothing wrong with being the borrower or the lender. Of course, I don't borrow or loan with acquaintences, I've got to know you somewhat beforehand.

Anyway, I got stiffed a few times over the years. Mostly by older guys who hopefully forgot they owed me money to begin with.

I don't stiff anybody. Although I will add that in years gone by my father and older brother told me more than a few times to forget about the money I borrowed from them at the track that day. That was a long time ago when my expendable bankroll was no more than $50 and the card was strictly limited to the 9 live races at Keystone, Garden State, or Liberty Bell.

A bit more pressure handicapping the early races back then for sure.... :)

I've never borrowed or loaned money at the track. Off the track? Yes.

I agree with Goren. When I lend money, I don't expect to ever get it back. When I do, I'm surprised.

Not quite. I borrowed, not from friends but from the bank. Back in the 70's and 80's, I was still in my wilder, irresponsible, drinking, crazy gambling mode. :( Credit cards were still fairly new to me, and I had made the wonderful  discovery that one could get what is called a cash advance with one.  Of course there was a hefty initial fee, and then the advance would be subject to the regular interest charge, but hey, why not get a hundred, that horse in the last race should go off around 5-1, and just cannot lose. :liar: At both SA and HOL there was a special window for cash advances. It was staffed by an attractive young woman. I hit that window so many times that her and I were on a first name basis. :D Memory is fuzzy, but believe this was before there were ATMs all over the place, but even at those today there is usually a steep fee.
