Thanks CJ.

I had no idea that Cobalt Chloride (Blue Salt) would increase Red Blood Cell Count.

I'm a Race Director in another sport, and I can just see my Human athletes starting to eat Blue Salt to increase their Red Blood Cell count. They say it works on ANY mammals, so it would work in Humans. It basically tricks the body into thinking it has too few red blood cells, so the body increases the red blood cell count.

The danger of Blue Salt interfering with Thyroid function is very concerning.

They said it was not in American Thoroughbreds YET. But it has worked its way into Standardbreds.

I wonder what Lance Armstrong's comments would be, concerning this...? ...:D

I'd be surprised if it wasn't being used on thoroughbreds by now.Cobalt is listed on the list of ingredients of some equine supplements that i have in my barn. Very low on list of active ingredients i must say.

What is wrong with a healthy and prodigious Red_Cell count ?...

Am I missing something ?...

Better than Steroids, I'd say...

The issue, Lotta, is not with the elevated Red Blood Cell count, it's with HOW the Red Blood Cell count is elevated.

If you ingest Cobalt Chloride, you are doping. Why? Because you are "Manufacturing" the elevation artificially. Most Doping agencies consider any outside substance that improves performance other than a natural agent (like training or eating whole foods) to be artificially inducing performance enhancement, AKA doping.

If you take an athlete and have him or her eat a healthy diet and train at 8,000 feet, that's a natural non-artificially induced elevation of Red Blood Cells. If you do it via a substance like Cobalt Chloride, then you are spiking the Red Blood Cell count artificially via an outside unnatural agent.

And in this case, because you are interfering with normal Thyroid function, it's also dangerous.

I hope you are wrong CJ, and that it has not hit Thoroughbreds in the US yet, but I fear you are correct. We need national regulation in our sport, and fast.

What would Lance say? I'd assume many human athletes would say, "Hey, it's salt and chloride. What's the big deal?" ;) They all would know it was doping, plain and simple.

Too much cobalt can break down heart muscle. In the short term, I suspect it's a great performance-enhancer. Longer term, high doses are not good for a horse's or human's health.

Looks like the Baffert horses were not tested for Cobalt but were administered thyroxin per the trainer.

Crazy it was used as a foam stabilizer in beer in North America breweries in the 60's per article.
