Meaning? I haven't followed this horse closely.

Condolences to the connections. They had to be shocked. Should've been routine surgery with no complications. I wonder what else was awry with the colt to bring on the laminitis.

Laminitis is always a serious risk when a horse has an injury to one of its limbs. It usually appears shortly after the injury and occurs in one or both front legs, as it did here. We have much better knowledge of how to prevent edocrine-related chronic laminitis and how to treat and prevent acute laminitis related to grass and grain founder or other serious conditions like colitis, but supporting-limb laminitis is still challenging.

It's a rarity that a simple bone chip or fracture brings on laminitis. Complicated fractures, infection, other internal issues, and uneven load on the limbs are what puts the horse at significant risk of laminitis. Starlight even expressed their shock that this was the end result of a simple bone fracture.

I think their shock was mostly over losing their beloved horse .

Laminitis is just that complex . This is why there are foundations and
ongoing conferences on the disease .

Secretariat was euthanized when he foundered . His owners , I'm sure
would have loved to have him live a much longer life .

There is no reason to blame anyone for the unfortunate death of "Intense Holiday" .
Some horses have better outcomes when stricken . Many don't .
