Nice article on a great guy.

Poker is a very social game...and you get to really KNOW some of the fascinating characters in it. Horse racing is different...more private and anti-social.

The poker players seem to be dying younger though...

I knew some older-timers from that world, so I can certainly relate and understand "Knish's way".....

Funny thing tho, as a younger man, I often envisioned myself living that way....That is, even tho I had the card thing figured out pretty well, it wasn't until I finally figured out that I was a "living-tell", and that the "reality bell" had rung, and took me so long to hear it, that I finally got the message.....This lifetstyle was not for me...haha..

I guess that is why I enjoyed "Rounders" and the characters in it, so much...

Poker world is full of illusions and Mayfair Club (where I used to be a regular for a year or two) does not escape the rule!

In both the underground and the casino games, all the action revolves around a few “loaded” live ones and it is not uncommon the pros to play from a common bankroll.

Some of the figures who used to frequent MC, had extremely large egos, especially when it was about their game of choice, which usually was one of hold-em, gin or backgammon (which back then, was played for large monies)..

I still remember and smile, the time when a friend of mine, who happened to be the runner up of the world backgammon championship (held in the Casino of Monaco), was visiting me here in NYC.

I presented him to the crowd of MC, as a rich Greek business man starving for some backgammon action!

A guy who I will not reveal his name (he passed away a few years ago), who considered himself an expert backgammon player, volunteered to entertain my friend...

The game ended by 2:00 am (this was the closing time) with the local expert been behind several thousand, with an new array of bad beat stories that should have kept him busy for the next six months!

Anyway, most of these old time pros eventually went broke, had to open a poker club, work for a bookie or just be in a constant borrowing cycle to survive and satisfy their gambling addiction...
