Weather screwed them, big time.
Off turf races have been scratched into unbettability (if I can make up a word), and they have four of them moving to the main track.
Not that the Gr2 Sheepshead Bay has been moved from the inner to the Widener turf course.

Race 8 is the only one I can bet today - any love for :6: Sir Leslie at 15-1 ML??

i don't understand about this thing of cancelling turf races
someone fill me in but in france don't they just keep running on the grass regardless of the weather?

Race meets only last usually 2 weeks at a time as they go from track to track. No worries of Turf getting ruined like it would at tracks that run almost daily as in the US. I believe?

Belmont is getting to be a damn disgrace! I have never seen or even heard of any track that has more scratches then they do, day in and day out. I really need to find another track.

Wow, what can you say.

Try selling that to the "lottery types"

"hey, come to the track, and hit a pick 6 and get.....wait for it....

20 bucks!!"

Yeah, that's the main reason. The turf course can get pretty messed up if they consistently run on it when it's wet.

i wish i knew what happened to the pick five payoff. before the fifth went off i wrote down that it would pay $21.87 for 50cents.
the actual payoff ended up 19.35.
it was already chalky enough, don't know why it would have changed like that.

there was probably something in the last race that was alive to a horse who got scratched and that money went on the favorite.

Race 8 - Sir Leslie came up big and ran a nice 2nd for me at good odds...that's good enough.

Got bored today and played a few at Pimlico - bad idea.
I play that track 3 days a year (and all three were last week) and I need to stick to that!

no late scratches or changes

It doesnt have to be a late scratch it just has to be any scratch that happened after pools opened in the morning....i dont know how NY works, but at Santa Anita, people are betting pick 5s at 8am or some really early hour, so its possible that some bets were in before all the horses were actually scratched, that's the only thing i can think of that it might be.

Ok.....I just checked the rainfall totals for 5/24 at JFK which is the closest airport with official climate readings. On 5/24 JFK received 0.37" of rain for that 24 hour period. The last hour that station reported precip was at 7:51 PM on the
24th.
So .....my question is how the hell can THREE TENTHS of an ince of rain cause NYRA to take the days races off the turf?

PhantomOnTour

The card today is basically unplayable. Even Race 6, which has been kept on the turf, has scratched to 4 runners (they have three races today with 4 runners in them).

It down poured over here last night. Most of that rain came with in a 20 minuet period.

Woodbine looks really nice.
SA has a few good ones, as does CD - a boycott track, but I might make an exception tonight.

At this point I count 56 runners for 10 races. I'll be ignoring Bel today.

Too many tracks, not enough horses...and it is only going to get worse this summer.

PhantomOnTour
06-14-2014, 01:23 PM
Just did a quick study of all dirt races at Bel during the month of May this year.
Avg number of starters per race is ~ 6.57
I did include off turf days so one can argue that the number of "true" dirt starters is going to be higher since some off the turf races got cut down to 4 runners.
I don't have the avg number of starters for recent Bel meets as a means of comparison (and I could be completely incorrect here) but it sure seems like the fields are shorter this year.

I am worried about how Saratoga will fill those cards while running six days a week

Avg field size in North America, after holding fairly steady for a number of years started dropping noticeably again last year and is only getting worse. Glad I prefer grass and maidens because at least there are still some decent fields for those types of events.

RXB

Here's a few links to some stats from the Jockey Club. I should correct my previous post as these stats show that 2011 was when the average field size starting tumbling again.

The foal crop has declined by more than 50% over the past 30 years but it's about the same as it was in the late 1960's when the game was still strong. However, the number of starts per horse has suffered a massive decline since the late 1960's: about 40% annually and more than 50% in career terms. (Average starts per horse started collapsing right around the time that Lasix administration became a common practice. I doubt that it's entirely coincidental.)

Also, as Jeff P has noted previously, purse expansion has not been shown to help the cause. What's really needed is fitter animals that race more often. Who wants to own a horse that rarely gets out of the barn to race? And who wants to bet on an increasingly steady diet of four-horse and five-horse fields? Wake up, trainers and breeders.

You really have to expect the unexpected in those state bred turf races. I couldn't have found the 2 with a telescope.

For what its worth, i had a comment in his May 26th race last year "sawed off twice" and commented that it was a "throwout" line. His Oct 12th race of last year, my comment was: "deceptively strong try, good prep for next time, hopefully with jock change"

With all that said, i used him underneath in tri's and supers and ended up catching a small exa box, but even with the positive notes, it was still a hard horse to come up with, its hard to just keep making excuses.

According to @santaanitapark racing office text at 8:30 a.m., there are currently a grand total of 7 horses entered for Friday's card.

I hope racing has realistic expectations for Del Mar and Saratoga this summer, think its going to be a real struggle to fill 5 and 6 day week race cards - especially during the middle of the two meets.
