Palace Malice going in a field of 4 at Belmont 5/11 race 3.

There can't be that many a year with that low of a ML at a major track (or any track).

I can't believe they couldn't find a fifth horse to enter the race. Even if your horse ran dead last you would still pick up around 5k. You could just look at it as a paid work out and you would always have the chance to finish higher and pick up a bigger paycheck.

That's true, but can you imagine the uproar if a horse just basically jogged around the track to pick up a 5th place check or 4th place check if some horse was eased in the race. There would be a few people who actually bet on the horse who just jogged around the track.

Looking at the conditions it's not what you make, it's what you keep. It's going to cost more to run 5th than the 5th place purse you'll get back. And then there's expenses like jockey & trainer that knock it down even more, so why not wait, try to win a nice high priced claimer or allowance & get a bigger chunk of that purse in what is an easier race ?

If you did not nominate 2 weeks ago and decided a couple days ago then $3K supplemental + $750 entry + $750 start. Add to that jockey/trainer/ pony rider/ other stuff and it looks like not much net for a 5th place finish.

Or, as well call that, the last race every day. :D
