One thing I noticed about the Bris PP and Quirin Speed Points for this years Derby.

Here is the field and their Bris Run Style and Speed Points:

1. E/P 5
2. E 6
3. E 5
4. E/P 5
5. E/P 7
6. E/P 6
7. P 3
8. E/P 9
9. E/P 5
10. E 8
11. Scratched
12. P3
13. E/P 8
14. P 3
15. E/P 2
16. P 2
17. P 1
18. E/P 4
19. E/P 5
20. P 0

a. Most of the Early Speed Point Horses are in posts 1 thru 10!!!

So how does this affect California Chrome???

Does it force him to be on the lead?

Will the cheap early speed cause him to expend more early energy than usual?

Does it matter because he is supposed to be the superior horse?

Will the exactas and trifectas be filled with early horses running late?

b. There are no Sustained or 'S' types in this years Derby!

Does this mean that the Pressers have a legitimate shot? Or is there no 'real' closer in this years field?

Just my opinion but I think Cali Chrome is going to be victimized by the way this race sets up.

It means, IMHO, an early speed duel among the inside half of the field letting the outside half of the field get to the inside quicker than their post positions would suggest otherwise.

Good post!

I was surprised when I saw this myself. 20 horse field, not one.

My reading is that CC will mostly be unbothered by not being up front early and will not waste energy fruitlessly chasing the rabbits.

My overriding concerns for him are still the same as they were weeks ago: 1. traffic that randomly hurts some but not others; 2. does he feel comfortable on this particular surface.

I think that he has an advantage over most of the rest with having only those two concerns. Everyone else has more working against them.

What do the numbers mean after the running style?

Those are the speed points. The higher the number, the more likely the horse will want the lead.

Ken

Completely agree. Additionally, he's had a mild early or middle fraction in each of his last 4 races, which he's surely won't get today. 5/2 is really bad value (famous last words).

If Dance With Fate takes to the dirt, he's the one to beat imo.

Ah thanx! Much appreciated.

I also took a look at running styles and my picks are more toward the mid pack. I think there is going to be a lot of early speed that will not get supported at the wire.

My last year's pick was Palace Malice. Who knew that he was going to be rabbit?

This year I am guessing that the :13: Chitu or the :10: Wildcat Red will be the rabbits................. and will be throwing them off my tickets.

I am trending toward the :16: Intense Holiday and going to key him with the

:4::5::12::14::20: in the exacta's and tri's.

About 4 hours before post so we will see soon.

Good Luck to All!

:12: and :16: are my picks as best sustained runners.

I don't care what those designations are behind the horse's name -- they're just so much horse manure.

Those are the speed points. The higher the number, the more likely the horse will want the lead.
For example: E 0 or 1, 0r 2, etc. Means the bigger number the faster.
P (Presser): same thing bigger number closer top the front. A P-0 is likely to be among the last runners.
