When I spoke to Barry about a month ago he said that he was spending too much time publishing and not enough time playing.

I was playing every day, plus working on (and selling) my ratings, doing magazine articles, playing Internet casinos and writing a book about the subject, as well as writing and producing the newsletter and running the administrative end of the business. Too much work, too little time. Something had to give...

Now I actually get to relax every once in awhile. Still multi-tasking, though--as I'm working on tomorrow's card at Santa Anita, I've got the Laker game on.

Don't waste your time watching the NBA. Now SA, on the other hand, how about some picks?

Barry,

On another thread you wrote:

I keep daily records of every bet in my computer so I know how I'm doing at all times. (Of course, I'm also betting to show, or on exactas, or the pick 6, or against horses on betting exchanges, etc.)

I was wondering if you could elaborate on your show betting. I am always trying to explore new ways to make $$ and not just by picking winners, and thought Show betting was one of those ways, but can't seem to turn a profit.

I would appreciate your opinion, and any guidelines you would care to share.

Thanks,

TRM

I covered show betting in detail in Money Secrets At The Racetrack.

I use my own chart with a "percentage of the pool cannot go over this number" and my own odds line. For instance, if I make a horse 2-1, I can bet him to win at 3-1, and/or to place if he has no more than 18% of the place pool, and/or to show if he has 16% or less of the show pool.

However, in some races I do not consider playing to place or show at all. For instance, the horse might be a "win-or-out" type who if he doesn't control the pace, finishes nowhere. Or maybe there are only four horses I think can run in the money, and they are the four favorites, so place and show prices will be depressed.

Also, when betting to place and/or show, you need to bet at the last moment to get the latest information, and be careful not to overbet. Even then, sometimes a horse who was an overlay to place or show with a minute to post is an underlay when the race goes off.

Most of my bets go into the win and exacta pools.
