Got a flyer in the mail from John Conte, who won some handicapping contests and is now a tout. It's a handicapping book he is selling for $27.95 or as an ebook for $19.95.

Was wondering if anyone had any insight into this book or used it so far.

There is another thread somewhere on Pace that discusses the same flyer, if I am not mistaken.

I have respect for John Conte, but at this point in my Handicapping Library, I'd need something fairly Earth-Shaking for me to be adding another book.

However, that's me. You may find the book insightful. And if you do, please let us know.

The postcard pitch that I received today lists the hard-copy price as $24.95. (I stopped reading when the pitch mentioned using ten red flags that eliminate sure losers.)

Yeah, checking each horse in the Derby field for ten red flags could take a while.

I agree with you, but that's not what I had mainly in mind. Regardless of how long it would take you to look for those "red flags", I've found that methodologies that operate on an elimination basis like that tend to leave you with chalk horses that are obvious to everyone, and that may have a good chance of winning, but that still don't win often enough at high-enough odds to compensate for the losses from the times when (for whatever reason) they don't perform as expected. Meanwhile, horses that you discard out-of-hand because of a single such "red flag", without even bothering to take a close look at their overall records, may not be the most likely winner of the race, but may have a better chance of winning than their odds indicate, and win often enough at higher odds to produce an overall profit.

I didn't care much for Conte at the beginning of the Horse Player's series but
enjoyed him toward the end.

Just curious what's going on with the book. I saw it on Ebay, then I went to
see some reviews on Amazon, and it's not up for sale on these sites any longer? Something legal come up, anyone know?

I was using that same magnifying glass before my cataract surgery, really sucked. Just wish I had half his hair left.

Sad to say, I believe John Conte has passed away. A couple of years ago.

John Conte passed away on November 4, 2020...at the age of 81.
