There is a lot of hate for Chrome & I'm hoping that transfers over to getting 3-1 on derby day

I didn`t necessarily agree with Chrome because I am a hater, maybe I think it will get me slightly better odds...?

California Chrome - if he's the best as all his groupies say he is, then it shouldn't matter what post he gets.

I'll grab a HUGE win bet on him if he's 4/1.

Normally I am a harness and greyhound player that dabbles in thoroughbreds when I am at the track. But this year, I was really interested in a youngster name Candy Boy. Followed him at SA until I saw California Chrome. Seems like with each succeeding start, he gets heavier, stronger and looks more unbeatable on the track. That last start in the SA Derby was as impressive against the boys as Untapable was against the girls down at Fairgrounds.

Yes, I will be playing a (# 13) / (# ?) Oaks Derby DD on Friday..Untapable with California Chrome...both can breeze out the gate and be right off the leader's shoulder wearing them down and explode once they hit the lane. Really hate the 13th post and am crossing my fingers for a post for Chrome anywhere between 6 and 15.

I'm not a hater I just think it would make this Derby complete chaos... and I am a fan of that.

This is rich. Your all over this website talking about how your all in on a 2-1 shot in a 20 horse race. Its insane.

Whoever Baffert trains. I hear post 1 is the "best post" as its the shortest distance between two points. ;)

Only want the best for Bob, would be great for racing if one of racing's brightest training stars were to win.

People keep saying that, but it is simply not true.

Here are the post positions and the number of wins since 1900:

1 – 12
2 – 9
3 – 8
4 – 10
5 – 12
6 – 6
7 – 8
8 – 10
9 – 4
10 – 10
11 – 3
12 – 3
13 – 4
14 – 2
15 – 3
16 – 3
17 – 0
18 – 1
19 – 0
20 - 2

Post Position # 1 is tied for the most wins with 12. I admit the numbers for the outside posts are skewed negatively because many Derbys did not have that many starters. But I think most Derbys after 1900 had at least ten.

Then there was the post somewhere here which stated that in races with 18 or more starters the horse breaking from Post Position #1 had won only one time out of 28 races. That was incorrect in two ways. First, there were 32 such races. Second there were two winners from post one; Black Gold in 1924 and War Admiral in 1937.

Here is what is more important. Only three post positions recorded three or more wins in those thirty two races. Sixteen post positions recorded two or less wins. That does not seem to me like a death sentence.

This isn't quality useful data to a certain extent. The number of starters varied so much at the beginning that the 1 spot shoudl have a higher number

You are correct and you are wrong. I'll have another did win from 19 in 2012. I have him listed in my stats on races with more than 18 starters. The list I copied and pasted from the Blood Horse article does not.
Clyde Van Dusen in 1929 and Big Brown in 2008 won from 20.

The question should be: Since they went to 20 horses how many winners have come from the 1 hole ?
In a 20 horse field if a horse runs a straight line from the 1 hole he will crash into the rail after the gap.

Clyde ran before my grandmother was born.........but now I do remember all the hype about no one winning from 20th hole since 1929. They were beating that angle into the ground .

They did the gelding & NY angle in 2003. I believe most angles were broken after 1999. The big angle that remains is the 1882 Apollo angle.

What angle are they beating into the public this year?

No Cal bred has was since 1962? No non-raced as a 2 year old........
