Traditionally, futures have to go down as a terrible bang for your buck.
That is, of course, if you invest anything more than a few $ that you're willing to throw away.
You have to demand big odds and take a flyer - for little risk.

Much of the time, people holding futures tickets on horses that do well enough to make it to the race,
are better off waiting until race day.
The risk of losing your money due to a scratch is out of the equation,
and your odds, very often, are virtually the same.

Now, for example, if you knew about a California Chrome type horse back in Nov/Dec,
and could get triple digits for your bet, then it's worth a small wager.
Only for fun money, though........ ;)

The only future wagers I play are on horses that I think can be a derby favorite or top tier horse. I took Samraat in pool 3 at 30-1.

It was right before he won the Gotham, I knew all he had to do was place in that race and he would have the points. I knew if he won, he would have a shot to win the Wood and go on to low odds come derby day. As it stands, I know he my 30-1 is going to be way better than I could get on Derby day.

Futures are bad bets but once i n a while, you find a diamond in the deep water. Funny Code I believe was something like 100-1 in future bets out in Vegas. ....

This is an article I wrote on my blog last year about how I have used the Future Wager Exacta as a race day saver for the Kentucky Derby. It's not the only way to use the future wager, but it is what works best for me and my style of play. Hope it helps!
