Good to see the schedule expanded to Thursday nights. I'm pretty sure Mohawk will race five nights a week.

I would assume that if no one takes down the pool, it will be paid out on Woodbine's closing night, which is 5/19.

The pool was 36,000 last Thursday night, so its tough to scoop it. Not impossible I guess, but the 57.5% takeout on most nights is tough to accept.

Your math is correct but I'd guess most players don't look at it that way. It does make for a good promotion to be able to list "big CO pots".

Paying out half the pool as consolation means a different approach is necessary in constructing the tickets. The 168 combinations in my ticket (above) is just trying to get something back to cover an additional set of "Scoop" tickets with wild long shots.
Sat H5 was $481, but Monday $17,376 (2 winning tkts?)

cmp92
I understand there's going to be a coordination with the B tracks on the summer race schedules. Western Fair, Grand River and Georgian will get better non competing days?

Probably. Standardbred Canada had an article with all of their schedules a few weeks ago.

Yes, 2 winning tickets on Monday (ouch for those folks). 20 cent H5 paid 2x as much as the $1 super, even with the fave finishing 5th. So there is an example of the H5 paying great (not to mention almost getting scooped) even with the high takeout.

I would love to know how the pools play out for a wager like this... for example, what percentage of SH5 tickets will use a 40-1 horse on top (is it a lot more than 2%?) or what % of tickets use a 4-5 shot on top (is it a lot less than 50%?).

I still think if the takeout is 2 or 3 times bigger than it should be, its hard to make up for that by relying on pool inefficiencies (or brilliant handicapping :) ) to hammer out a profit over the long run. But yeah, its definitely good for the track to have a 6 figure carryover to promote, and it gives Woodbine an extra 40-50K in handle each night. Gulfstream is getting something like 6M in additional handle each month while their Rainbow 6 goes unhit, which comes in handy for those unexpected facility maintenance bills, such as "slot machines crash thru the ceiling to the ground floor". I will confess that I was completely fooled when I saw this in person last month.

Ok I'll bite. I am probably missing something here. 57.5% takeout? How did you get to that figure? Please explain.

They are advertising a low 15% takeout at their website.

I can answer that one, Sea.

On any day, the new Hi5 money is subject to the 15% TakeOut but then only 50% of that new money goes to paying off the winners who have correctly picked the top 5 in order. So most days the other half of the money is diverted to the jackpot pool which only gets paid when there is a single winning ticket. That makes the effective TakeOut 50+% for all but the Lucky Dude who gets the Jackpot.

$162,633 CO tonight!!

Last night's pool was 45,210 and they paid out 19,213.40 to winning ticket holders, give or take a few pennies. The mix of Canadian money with American money muddies things a bit.

I've read some articles from people that claim jackpot bets like the Rainbow 6 still offer good value despite the daily takeout, and maybe there are enough crazy tickets in the pool to make reasonable outcomes like last night overpay regularly. There were only 4 horses under 15-1 and they finished 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th, with the favorites finishing 2nd and 1st. Ray's ticket was all around it, didn't miss by much.

The C/O is actually 177K CDN tonight, but I think Ray is factoring in the exchange rate (or looking at a website that displays the US figure).

Go get 'em.

I see what you mean by 50+% takeout. Takeout for me is something that the track takes as commission for their expenses for running the track never again to be seen by the bettor.

Here the 50% is added to the pool for the next race day. Technically not the same thing as the regular takeout and calling it a takeout would not be right in my MHO. Eventually the whole pool will be paid to one lucky guy or maybe even to multiple people if the Jackpot keeps carrying over and it goes until the last race day of Woodbine on a 'must pay' night where the total pool is divided and given to the winning ticket holders even if they are more than one.

Most players who take part in this kind of betting are aware of the 50% pool carryover and the risks involved and are playing willingly in an attempt to win the jackpot.

Ray2000

You're right, the track never gets to keep the "Effective Take", that's for the daily players when no jackpot is hit.

It can also be looked at this way...

If you never cash a ticket it doesn't matter what the TakeOut is.

Tonight, R11, I'm playing :

I would think so, it's the ticket stamp number that determines the how many winners there are.

BTW
I made up that Dumb joke because last Saturday I came close to being Dumb Dora.

One too many Happy Hour Martinis and I almost played the same "Pot" ticket at a different, second ADW.
(I have to use Twinspires for Miami bets and that means using more than one ADW)

This is the way I understand it but if I have it wrong hopefully someone will correct me.

You can buy a single straight ticket on any 5 numbers like 1-6-5-7-2 for as little as $1 or any higher amount like 1.20 1.80 2.40 or 25.00 as long as the amount is a multiple of 20˘. They don't sell any ticket less than a dollar that I'm aware of.

Combination tickets like 20˘ Box 12345 or key box 6 with 2359 are Ok as long as they are at least $1 minimum total price. They are considered a single ticket sale.

It doesn't matter what the base ticket cost is ..20˘ or $1 or $10..as long as it's the only winning ticket sold then it pays the Jackpot.
(There can't be 2 different base prices on a single ticket transaction).

It would cost $6,048 to box 10 horses for 20˘..

Somebody will soon take the chance and box the field* if they think tonight's a longshot night or maybe on the last night of the meet.

I just bet this to test:-
Race 11 Woodbine SB
$0.20 | HI5
2 / 3 / 4 / 7 / 10
1 Bet | Total: $0.20

I can bet a single 20 cents HI5 ticket here.
I wonder if this the only winning ticket, do I hit the Jackpot? remember this is not $1 ticket but 20 cents.

Ray2000
04-18-2014, 02:28 PM
I'll be damned, I just played 2-1-6-4-8 for 20˘ at my ADW and it went thru...

Since it's chalk I'm not worried about killing my jackpot :)

I never thought about trying a 20˘ bet before....live and learn.

According the rules, I say if a 20˘ hits it pays!!!

EdZone

That means nobody gonna hit the jackpot if they count the .20 only winning ticket. As there always more than one .20 winning ticket for sure. It's possible noboy hit $1 ticket.
I'm sure someone already try $6,048 to box 10 horses but returns about $2000.

I wrote to WEG and this is the reply I got from them.

Jackpot Hi-5
A Jackpot Hi-5 bet is a betting transaction in which a purchaser of a ticket undertakes to select the exact order of finish of the first 5 runners in the specified Jackpot Hi-5 race. If there are races that have an entry, (i.e. 1 & 1A and/or 2 & 2B), Jackpot Hi-5 will not offer a wager consisting of both halves of the same betting interest. Example: If the same betting interest finishes first and second in a Jackpot Hi-5, the payout would be 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th.

That jackpot portion of the pool will only be paid out if there is a single winning ticket. If there are multiple winning tickets that have correctly chosen the first 5 runners of the race, they will receive 50% of the pool for that day. The other 50% will go over into the Jackpot carryover. If there are no winning tickets with the exact order of finish of the first 5 runners, 100% of the current day’s pool will be carried over into the Jackpot. There will be a mandatory payout at the end of the meet.

According to this rule only a single ticket holder of the winning combination will win the Jackpot.

It doesn't matter if the single ticket is $1 or 20 cents.

EdZone

Sea Biscuit, thanks for the explanation. I never see nobody hit the .20 pick 4 or HI5. I remember when they only have $1 Pick 4, a lot of time nobody hit the pick 4. But once they accept .20, first 10 times, someone get the .20 pick 4 and it paids good as no $1 ticket is winner.
Later on this won't happens again as everybody know there is a .20 bet. This is same as HI5, there must be someone hit the .20 even without the jackpot.

There's good information on best ways to play the Superfecta in AllWays newsletters from brisnet. These concepts can be applied to the Pentafecta in the same way.

Those (free) newsletters contain a lot of other good wagering tips so I'll post the link to the index. The Superfecta is covered in the January 2001 (Number 20) pdf file.
