The legendary Mickey Rooney died at age 93.
My parents were big fans of his and they urged me to watch
National Velvet . Was then I became a forever fan of Taylor and Rooney .
This is in memory of Liz and his name could be added at the end as well .

Rooney served his country and then entertained troops for many years. RIP!http://youtu.be/oB6oI04sMc4

They don't, and won't make 'em like him no more. Star of stage and screen. Youngest actor to be nominated for an academy award, twice. Could sing and dance and play several instruments, proficiently.

His talents will be missed.

No doubt about it, he's one in a billion, his list of work in the entertainment industry is longer than almost anyone's who's ever lived, Babe Ruth was in the prime of his career when this guy was working in silent films.

Incredible performer, like you say, they don't make em like this anymore and they didnt even make em like this back then either.

I met him once at the Saratoga simulcast years ago. Long before the Racino was there. These were the days when not many people hung out there during the day and I was still young. The guy was an absolute character, you couldn't miss him. He loved horse racing, he liked a horse at Belmont, told me. "Kid if this horse doesn't win, I'll run through the (Harness Track ) infield in my underwear." The horse won by 4. It was chalky but I swear to God this happened. He was sitting there with us like a "regular guy". The most famous person I ever met and actually sat with. He was a small guy that was larger than life.....I never forgot it and thought about that day when I heard the news...RIP Mickey....they don't make em like you anymore........he could do it all and even sit with the "regular guys" and shoot the shit about horses. you could tell he loved it too, he really wanted to be there. if he wasn't famous he would be the kind of character everybody knows at any track. he was really funny............much of his "act" came naturally, you could tell.

Most of us know him as the character actor he became in his later years. He was not always a character actor. At one time he was a super star. In 1939, 1940 and 1941 he was America's number box office star. RIP Andy Hardy.

Loved his character in The Black Stallion, the old trainer. You could tell by that peformance that he was really into horse racing.

I loved his quote (which I'm sure he borrowed from someone else) something to the effect -
"I lost $5 the first time I went to the track and I've spent a million dollars since trying to get it back."

Sad news indeed but he left lots of good memories behind.

Didn't he endorse some crazy system for horse racing that involved dice? Or am I thinking of the wrong person?

Met him briefly in the Chicago OTB I worked at in 1993.
He was upstairs in our restaurant section at a table.
With a racing form open, and betting voucher in hand,
he was just another horse player.
Loved the game - that was easy to see.

RIP Mickey Rooney

For many years during the summer, you would see Mickey hanging around the walking ring at Arlington on weekends.

Ray Paulick posted a photo of him at the track with Mel Brooks and Dick Van
Patton . Wish it could be confirmed that it was from March 30 . as he claimed . Pretty amazing if the date is right .

Anthony Zerbe tells some great stories about parties at Mickey Rooney's house in the 50's in Hollywood. He says Rooney went through every famous leading lady in Hollywood in the 50's. Some big names too

Interesting read about Mickey and his love of racing. He even talks about the future of in-home betting, and this was 1993!

Mickey's body is still unclaimed due to a family dispute concerning where he wanted to be buried.
