I'm sure many of you have seen this before, but for those of you who haven't - a fun read.

Thx Edward - that was a nice read.
Broad Brush raced before I got into the game, but I found out quickly that he was a very productive broodmare sire.

RIP Richard Smalls, old school trainer

It is a fun read , thx for posting .

Another tough horse Small conditioned for Meyerhoff was Valley Crossing .
Had a nice rivalry going with Devil His Due for a while .
He accomplished a great deal with the Md breds .

Broad Brush

Sad news to hear of course.

He was a nice guy. He brought other horses to Thistledown after "Brush"
and I always went and talked to him about how the big guy was doing.
He was always friendly and happy to talk to.

He did a great job understanding a certain very talented horse who needed
a lot of understanding to do his best.

R.I.P.

And Concern
He wasn't as good as Concern, but Include was a big time finisher on the Maryland circuit also.

For me, Dickie Small represented the best in Maryland racing. I loved playing his horses - you just knew they would be flying down the stretch!

RIP, Mr. Small, and thanks for the memories.

Made it a point when I went to Maryland to actually walk up an introduce myself to Mr. Smalls. He was a great guy and one of the last of the old guards in MD.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Love this quote from his obituary and sums it up. Racing has lost a true ambassador.
"Dickie was the consummate horsemen," said Maryland Jockey Club stakes coordinator Coley Blind, a friend of Small for more than 40 years. "Horses came first. He put everything into the horses. He knew everything about his horse right down to the pimples. He was a good man and very easy to deal with from the racing office perspective."

This was my first year of handicapping and fell in love with closers. The farm I worked for actually stood Blumin Affair and I helped train his best babies.0CfSJn3tI8M

I think Include was trained Buddy Delp, if memory serves me right.

He changed jocks for this from Francine Villaneuve in the Rebel to Gomez .

Bailey did well with him too almost catching the Bull ( Travers ) and of course the Classic .

A lot is written about Small giving a shot to female jockeys and to new young
jocks in general .
Smart man, used the top jockeys for the bigger dances .
