Someone had a great quote in another post and said ' finding the clunker is just as important as finding the winner' or something like that. and i thought it would be fun to look back at the clunkers from past years that made the super.

2013 - Golden Soul 2nd 35-1
2012 - Went The Day Well 4th 30-1
2011 - Shackleford 4th 23-1
2010 - Make Music For Me 4th 30-1
2009 - Mine That Bird 1st 50-1
2008 - Tale Of Ekati 4th 37-1
2007 - Imawildandcrazyguy 4th 29-1
2006 - Jazil 4th 30-1
2005 - Giacomo 1st 50-1, Closing Argument 2nd 71-1, Don't Get Mad 4th 29-1 $1 Superfecta: (10-18-12-17) Paid $864,253.50

Im thinking Chitu this year to be passing tired horses late at about 25-1....

I wouldn't say that shackelford was a clunker...others were for sure...

that was my quote and in my opinion the very best way to play the derby

Conquest Titan might clunk up for a piece coming from the clouds with Mr. Churchill Downs aboard. If he gets in.

worried about his points but yes he is a candidate...also think harpoon and commanding curve fit the clunker formula

The Kentucky Derby has become very "unique" from a win odds wagering standpoint. It creates value for horses with lower odds and decreases value for horses with larger odds. The last KD to have a runner at 100-1 or greater was in 2001. The last KD to have a runner at 60-1 or greater was 2008.

Just look at the 2010 KD, each of the 20 entrants was between 6-1 and 32-1; that's crazy. Even last year (2013), I know the chalk (Orb) won, but nobody in the entire field goes off 40-1 or higher? Crazy.

That's an interesting way to look at the race. It wasn't that long ago that a 20 horse field was considered large, and 15-16 horses was the norm (mid-late 1980s). One would think there'd be more long shots with more betting interests, but I guess everyone is looking for the next Mine That Bird and trying to cash big.

Just another reminder of how the breed has gotten worse and can't produce a superstar.

know what i notice with these clunker uppers is in the pp's they are passing horses from the last call to the finish in just about all of there previous races... even if its like 6-4, 4-2, 7-4 etc...
