I love the way that man thinks!

What makes the current system so poor in my mind is that 2yo stakes money gets counted. Many quality 3yos just weren't ready then and will get passed by because of the Action This Day type horses. It would be ridiculous for that horse to be in the field, yet Derby Fever does strange things to connections.

Interesting tidbit in another recent article by Davidowitz on the Trackmaster site re: The Cliffs Edge. He claims the horse absolutely hates crowding, which he will almost certainly get in the Derby. In the Blue Grass he ended up saving ground around most of the far turn then only had to swing into the 3 path in the stretch. If he wants to be widest of all turning for home, he could be in the 10+ path on Derby Day.

Rule 2: At time of entry, award available starting spots to eligible winners of any Graded stakes at 1-1/16 miles or longer in the current year. (In other words, Graded stakes earnings in sprints and one mile races would not count, nor would races from the prior year.)

then ...

All winners of Rule 2 races will deserve preference over second place finishers in Rule 2 races and all second place finishers will deserve preference over third place finishers.

Uh ... only winners of Rule 2 races are eligible under the first excerpt. So, of course, they get preference over second and third place finishers in Rule 2 races. Did he mean Rule 2 to read "winners of any Graded Stakes money"?. If so, the second excerpt would make sense.

Sloppy thinking and writing.
