Eclipse Award winner and former leading California stallion Bertrando succumbed naturally to infirmities of old age March 27 at River Edge Farm, longtime farm manager Russell Drake confirmed.I'm quite saddened to read this, for a variety of reasons.

My favorite era in racing that I was a live witness to...late 80s, early to mid 90s....

Big B had 2 winners on March 27th at Santa Anita, one Female and one Male (Races 1 and 3)

Leaves an amazing legacy behind, he will be missed for sure.

Thanks for posting this. I feel fortunate as a horseplayer to have seen him in several races and up close a couple of times. The term STUD seemed to fit him.

very sad to read this....bertrando is stunned was a great moment in our sport but he didn't stay stunned too long, a real champion.

Oh no!! I was thinking about him earlier today and wondering about this coming 2nd to Arcangues... and tactics in that race.. RIP big fella

I saw Bertrando race a few times and have some great memories. Sad loss.
