I check the list of members that are here this Sun am at 05:30 and there are all these strange names that are registering.
avqxoitw, ayrkufsd, dcfkjpez, dgcunosf,, Egatovef, Egwharaf, elluoljc, eoylvmpt, ghcdaosc, gtopfcng, hgcgiewb, htvldthq, kfsnkhac, kfwdhqhh, kpsrpjng, kynfftnk, lcnrkszk, ntzcmpui, odfrljsk, ornhskos, owlm4, qgiakmwe, qhiwhwvi, , tfkwfaos, uhtfceic.
What is this all about? Are we being invaded by covert Peta members?

Far be it from me to tell Mike how to run his board, however, making some random forays into the roster list, I find lots of users with no posts and a join date quiet a bit in the past.
It IS spring. Time for a spring cleaning?
Those unused names are Plan B's

Those are names of spam registrations. And as you can see, there are MANY.
That is why I no longer allow instant verification of new members. It sometimes takes a few days for me to get around to manually verifying each and every new member via email and IP address check (sites such as a stopforumspam.com and another source I use have a database of known spam IPs and email addresses).
Once a name is found to be spam, it is deleted. Thus, if you monitor closely, you will see the total number of members drop with regularity after I go through and cull all the spam registrations from the database.
I'm sure there is a more automated way of verification available with the newer versions of vBulletin, which would be another incentive for me to upgrade the board software, but I've been the laziest SOB you can imagine when it comes to upgrades...

I have a question for you, Mike. How many new members have you registered in the last, say, two weeks? Or even since the Asmussen story broke? One can readily see there are new posters here.
14 years, this site has been in existence. I'm laughing at the many who still actually believe Twitter is where everyone gets in-depth knowledge of this sport. I'm serious, I really do laugh at this ... in 140 characters and less. Twitter, and FaceBook, as well.

Thanks Mike, That is what I was thinking. I wish there was a way we could hit back. Got my weekly letter from BoA stating about my security codes needing updated. Only trouble is that I have no BoA account and traced the the ip address to a small village in Nigeria. Man those Nigerians are always looking to move up in the world. Thanks for keeping the board clean and dealing with the many personalities (including me) that make this the best Board for horse racing.

I think the only useful horse info I got from Twitter was when Joe Harper announced Del Mar was going back to dirt. And that was because of a gag gift at Bruce Headley's 80th Birthday party.

I guess I'm one of those - been around for a while but never posted. It's just that I don't know if I can word my replies as well as the majority of posters on this board, nor do I feel that I know as much about the sport as the rest of you, so I tend to stay quiet and lurk around. Besides, I enjoy reading all of the other comments. They're very enlightening and, for the most part, entertaining.

I'm curious, why would some people use these spam sign-ups? I can understand multiple handle names but these types make no sense to me.

You might be better off just lurking, Tom...posting can be a lot more dangerous than it seems. I was reluctant to post here for a long time myself...and then I started posting occasionally. Before I knew it, I was hooked...and I found myself typing the night away on a continuous basis.
Don't say I didn't warn you... :)

I see what you mean, especially after having read through some of the more contentious threads this past week. Thanks for the fair warning. As long as I keep it professional and refrain from getting too personal with others, I should be okay. Right? And no, devilsbag, I'm not Tom Skiffington. Just another guy named Tom.

Yep! Clay pigeons and sitting ducks. Some days the shots fired really are tough!! One's gotta be made of "grit" to be able to hang at this place. We break 'em in right. Can you imagine someone so ugly this morning, they blamed PA and Cj for promoting the wrongs of thoroughbred racing.

PA, I ran an NHL phpBB board for a few years and I ended up getting so sick of deleting and IP banning accounts that I just started banning whole country blocks of IPs with an .htacess file.
There are only about a dozen countries or less that originate 95% of all the phony spammer registrations, it was pretty easy. Start with China, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Romania, and India.

https://www.countryipblocks.net/country_selection.php The population of those countries is about 37% of world population. There is no need to list Ukraine Belarus Romania separate from Russia, they'll be all one soon...
Back on topic though..
Shouldn't there be some kind of reward for those PA posters whom Beyer quoted in his article? I would even settle for more vCash. it's been stuck at 400 forever!

I already remove registrations from those countries without thinking twice about it.
