I know Tom is busily reading through our selections, and scratching off our selections like Richard Dreyfus in "Let It Ride". :) "Who do you like?"

Looks like total chaos on paper, with the first turn being a bit crowded, and the horses I like parked outside. I'm going to give :9: Almost Famous one more shot, and would like the :5: a bit more if he hadn't detoured back to Florida on his way from Arkansas. Tossing Rosie in at a price.

Yea, the race looks wide open to me.
1-Big Bazinga is somewhat interesting. Not really a horse I thought that I would want to include, but he's grown on me. I liked his Grey Cup race. That was an honest pace. Delta was asking too much, and he got a wide trip. Ditto for the Holy Bull. Last time out ran a solid enough effort at Gulfstream.

He's the kind of big slow-gaining, grinding horse that seems to do well in this race. Could save some ground and stalk off of a fast pace from the inside.

Or I could be completely wrong. He's the 3rd highest double to the favorite, so he should be big enough odds that I can include without regret.

4-Tamarando looked awesome in the last race. Not a real big horse and it will be interesting if he can get up here. If his race transfers, he's a deserving favorite. Will likely take some money.

7-All Tied Up is another live closer. I thought he had a little bit of traffic in his last, but wasn't as impressed on 2nd viewing.

10 - Harry's Holiday is a horse I really like. But he'll need to work a trip from the outside.

11 - We Miss Artie looks like an underlay to me. Maybe I'm wrong and he'll love the class drop, but he's probably 2nd betting choice - I'll let him beat me.

I thought I had it at the sixteenth pole....the horse just probably isn't good enough to get the extra sixteenth....had concerns about that.

I have to say though, Johnny V. is the strongest rider around. He gets so much out of horses routing 1 1/8 or up.

Another bad beat for me, I keyed 10 with 2458 in the exacta letting Mr. Pletcher beat me, which off course he did. Interesting that no one selected the 11 to win yet he went off the second choice.

The track was definitely playing to speed. Only 2 who finished well came from out of it.

Should have posted here but was not going to play the race myself, but it was posted prior to the race on my forum.

Spiral Stakes at Turfway. I just got around to posting this, sorry. Don't really have any earthshattering revelations in this one. Probably a good one to pass, regarding wagering. The early lead should be between 10 8 11 and 9, no surprise, with 8 3 4 and 2 making mid moves, and the winner should come from 8 11 5 and 10, again nothing surprising except for the 4 being missing as a win contender, which may add some value. I'm hoping the 5, Coastline, shows well here, I liked him a bit in the Southwest but he didn't have the best trip in that one. Of course, the 4 Tamarando, as a late horse could benefit from a hot pace, but if things go as they have been in most of the preps, that pace will not be too hot. The odds will probably not be enticing on the 4 anyway.

Win contenders: 8 11 5 10

That horse is now 2 for 2 on synthetic and in both races he was the beneficiary of a very fast pace. IMO he's not that good. Tamarando didn't fire and several other horses got used early.

85 Beyer not going to get much, and all the deep closers couldn't make a move, not sure what the hell happened on the poly. With the strange camera angle they use, I still don't think he got there.

In the winner's defense, the track was kind to speed. As the day was getting older, it was getting faster, I reckoned.

raybo
03-23-2014, 11:15 AM
Did anyone really think the track would not be speed favoring? If no, then you weren't paying attention, if yes, then why did you not get the winner?

03-23-2014, 11:29 AM
I didn't know what to make of that track during the card. I was watching the races all day because I wanted to play the Bourbonette. Speed did well, but it was a chalk fest and there quite a few maiden races - which can produce dominant wire to wire winners.

I would say speed was good, but if the pace was fast, horses came back.

ArlJim78

when is Turfway not kind to speed? it always looks to me like they are running in quicksand. deep closers do not do well there.

I tend to agree with you. And, I thought the pace would be "good" but not "hot", thus the horses leading and pressing had a good chance of still being there at the end. I was a bit surprised that the winner was slightly farther back in the stretch than I thought he would be.
