Generally:

Low population = low taxes, less infrastructure.

High population = high taxes, more infrastructure.

The chart would be the same no matter how states vote blue or red.

In other words taxes are higher here in Illinois than in Louisiana because we have indoor plumbing.

Federal funding, property and sales tax.

Texas population 26 Mil
California 38 Mil

California is an outlier as well.

Texas is reaping the benefit of the shale oil boom, has to mitigate the loss of a state income tax and lost Medicaid funding. That's why I stated "generally" in my OP.

I've been to Texas a few times...i'll take Washington/Oregon and higher taxes any day.
