Before Bassett arrived, according to Lobato and Straub, clockers sometimes would enter slower works than they recorded and later would offer that information (for pay) to bettors. Or they could post a slow workout time to help a trainer who might be worried about his horse getting claimed.

Lobato said that situation had been corrected by the time he began working as a clocker in 1985.

The days of trainers using shoe polish to cover markings or changing saddle clothes to disguise horses virtually are over, as well.

"It behooves the trainers to cooperate with us," Straub said.

That was a very interesting article! I don't any of that information in my database but I would trade my pace numbers to be in on that kind of stuff everyday!
