Google isn't helping as much as I hoped on this one.

I'm looking for a few ideas about racing related events for the first two weeks of July.

Basically something relatively on par with Saratoga/Del Mar, where the racing is special but also in an area with other stuff to do.

This could be almost anywhere and I'm open to TB, harness, jumps, whatever.

Having an option or two for this sort of thing will help stave off the pressure for me to spend a week with the in-laws. So yes, I'm motivated! ;)

The Queens Plate is running on July 6/14. There are other tracks within driving distance, Mohawk, Ft. Erie, Finger Lakes etc.

That's a good one. I notice the Calgary Stampede is in that window too. Hmmmmm

Belmont will be good stateside, particularly 4th of July weekend. That is about as good as you will find stateside.

Overseas, Ascot runs July 11/12, though it isn't the best of racing. One very interesting day I would recommend is the Deutsches Derby, run at Hamberg in Germany on July 6th.

If I had to pick one, though, it would be the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamps on July 13. Its a fun night after the races too! You could probably do all three with proper planning, traveling within Europe is easy and cheap.

That's a good one. I notice the Calgary Stampede is in that window too. HmmmmmCalgary's new Century Downs Racetrack and Casino is scheduled for completion at the end of 2014 and I would imagine racing will begin in 2015.

The Calgary Stampede doesn't involve pair-mutuel racing per se, but does have World Class barrel racing, chuck wagon racing, bronco & bull riding, etc. This is a major event that should be added to everyone's "bucket list". If you love horses or the cowboy way this is a must see.

Stampede has risen to top 3 options.

I'm gonna look at the Derby in Germany too...

thanks all.

Eclipse Stakes G1, at Sandown in England.... July 5th
Grand Prix de Paris G1, on Bastille day at Longchamp in Paris... July 14th
If you went a week earlier you would catch the Irish Derby (last weekend in June, 29th).

How hard are queens plate tickets to get?

Not hard at all, there's always tickets available. You really don't need tickets to be honest with you, there's always seats available. The place fills up a half hour before the Plate runs, and they leave right after, so there's always seats available for the other races on the card. There's lots of vantage points to watch from, it's a good day to wonder around and check it all out.

Your best bet is to get there early and get into one of the restaurants on the third floor, they have the best view of the track. I usually get there at around 9am, and the place is empty.

Ticketed seats I believe were only for the seats on the 2nd floor and for about the last 1/8th of mile, I don't think tickets were necessary for the 3rd or 4th floors.

Woodbine, as always, you can walk right into the facility.

Hotel prices go nuts at Stampede time and probably are booked by now for July. For the events themselves, the races and rodeo are separate tickets, and the races include the nighttime grandstand show, and tickets aren't cheap. If you're young, then it might be more enjoyable as most of the young women who attend use stampede to get really drunk and act/dress slutty, parties everywhere.

When did any woman ever need a stampede to party? To get really drunk? Or to act/dress slutty? I do this every night I leave my house. Been a member of "Take 'Em All On" and AA for 3 years. Hasn't done a bit of good; fun habits are hard to break. Guess I love being slutty...

Here's how I roll Grits.
It's Lent, when a lot of folks are abstaining and giving up bad habits, things they love, etc....
I do the opposite.
I am an angel for 325 days a year, but during Lent I go crazy...drinking everyday, cursing random people in public, stealing...and on and on.
If I can find some top notch drugs I may just try them too.

YOLO

Phantom, I'm bound for NOLA next year on Ash Wednesday. Let's start with brunch. Bloody Marys and Eggs Benedict. I'll have on my sluttiest outfit and my Mardi Gras beads from Fat Tuesday's celebration, here at home. And I'll still be drunk. (Drinks on the plane.) Who needs mid July when there's Lent?
