Been handicapping for 32 years, but need verification on this as there was a race run at GG a couple months ago that was hand timed, and I want to see how close I can come up with the same time they did.

So, 1/16 poles are black? 1/8 green? 1/4 red? 1/2??? is the half red?

I'm watching this replay and Im not even coming close, and then I think Im missing as they blow by poles. I can't seem to get focused on where they're at on the track.

Try again but instead of getting same exact times, try to get the differences for each point of call.

For example, get the time of the leader running from say the 1/16th pole to the finish line. Is it the same difference that was published?

Repeat for the other race segments. Then, it should just be a matter of making an adjustment for where/when the timing of the race was actually started. Could be the run up distance is involved.

it's not the run up. I've got 20 second quarters and 29 second quarters. I'm not hitting the right poles.

start with a race you know is the correct time

like this Mile race
http://www.equibase.com/premium/eqbPDFChartPlus.cfm?BORP=P&STYLE=EQB&DAY=D&tid=GG&dt=01/04/2014&ctry=USA&race=8

at GG January 4th race 8

25.71 50.25 1:14.06 1:26.14 138.40

(24.54) (23.81) (12.08) (12.26)

run-up 85feet

fire up the chart and the video

start at the finish line.
look at the video time at the finish line.
go back 24.34 seconds (the race above's final quarter)
Thereabouts you will find the quarter pole. (may have to search and replay a few times)

12.08 seconds closer to the finish line you should see an 1/8th pole.

get familiar with what you can and can not see

work your way backwards until comfortable.

remember that with this race the gate is supposedly 85feet from where the race clock is supposed to start.

apply your new-found expertise to the questionable race, good luck
