View Full Version : Mt Rushmore of horse racing

Adding to my Mt Rushmore of sports thread, with an assist to poster Reckless who mentioned this in another thread.

We have Jockeys, Trainers, Owners and horses who can comprise "Rushmore". I think its going to be hard to just pick 4, so here's a beginners list of "Rushmore" for horse racing.

1) Secretariat

2) Man O War

3) The Bald Eagle

4) Woody

5) The Shoe

6) The Pirate

I'm sure you can add quite a few more jocks, trainers and horses....as well as a few owners who belong there.

You can even add announcers, media members and other people involved in horse racing. Remember, its Mt Rushmore, so its the best of the best.

Ramon's last lifetime ride was exactly 13 months ago, you're right, he's missed in this game for sure and if you want to put him on Rushmore, there's no way i would argue with it.

You nailed it. However I would remove bid and add Sea Biscuit. I think the horse needed to capture the American public to be on the Rushmore and that horse did.

A shout out thanks to SRU for mentioning me; sometimes my best ideas happen when I don't even know I have them. :)

I'll construct separate Mount Rushmore's each for horses, trainers, and jockeys, plus honorable mentions. Hell, if Lebron James could try to weasel in on the Mount Rushmore of NBA greats, why can't we?

This could be fun.

Horses:

1--Secretariat

2--Man 'o War

3--Dr. Fager

4--Damascus

Honorable mention: Swaps, Citation, Spectacular Bid, Ruffian

Trainers:

1--Woody Stephens

2--Charlie Whittingham

3--Jack Van Berg

4--D. Wayne Lukas

Honorable mention: Todd Pletcher, Richard Mandella, Bobby Frankel, John Campo

Jockeys:

1--Willie Shoemaker

3--Ramon Dominguez

4--Pat Day

Honorable mention: John Velasquez, Gary Stevens, Mike Smith, Angel Cordero

I think any list needs to consider duration of success:

1) Kelso ( 4x horse of the year)
2) Forego ( 3X horse of the year)
3) John Henry (2 X horse of the year)
4) Secretariat ( 2X horse of the year)
4) Affirmed ( 2x horse of the year)
5) Cigar ( 2x horse of the year)
6) Curlin ( 2X horse of the year)

Like any other sport's Rushmore lists, usually only one name is agreed upon by the majority when giving out four selections - Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, Wayne Gretzky, Babe Ruth, Pele, etc.

So for me, the list is:

1. Secretariat
2. SRU (the man, not the race track, kind of like Teddy Roosevelt - the Rushmore outlier)
3. Hialeah Park
4. A horse, trainer, jockey, writer, handicapper, or racing facility to be named at a later date.....

Not sure how this one got bumped - if we get 4 for the entire sport, how about 1 each of the following:

1. Horse
2. Stallion
3. Trainer
4. Jockey

Owner might belong there instead, I admit.

The problem with a Mt. Rushmore for horses is, carved into the side of a mountain, all horses would look alike to me. I wouldn't be able to tell Secretariat from Mr. Zippy (http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=Horse&refno=8846416&registry=T)

I say no. I don't believe they are the two best females to ever grace the track. Other nominees would be:

Ruffian
Personal Ensign
Genuine Risk
Ladies Secret

I say Ruffian and Zenyatta in that order, but wouldn't argue too much if someone picked two others. I think it is one of those, "on any given day" discussions.

Found this interesting.

Eclipse (raced 1769-1770) won 18 races without being defeated, including 11 King's Plates. It is said that he was never fully extended. He's remembered in the saying, "Eclipse first and the rest nowhere" to refer to a dominating victory. He was retired from racing because no one could be found to bet against him. He was also a great sire and is the tail-male progenitor of nearly 95% of modern Thoroughbreds.

Ruffian was a little like JFK the president. You really liked what you saw in the little time they were able to perform. In both cases, we extrapolate to greatness.

Ruffian facts:

1. Was 10-0 before her final race
2. Set stakes records in all 8 that she entered
3. Set two track records
4. Was in the lead at every call in every race she ever ran (less last)
5. Average length of victory was 8.3 lengths.
6. Ran from 5.5F to 12F

Ran 12F in 2:27.80. That's unbelievable for a 3yo filly.

Personal Ensign was a pretty good Distaff runner. Never lost, 13-0. Beat Gulch and Kings Swan in the Whitney. Beat Winning Colors twice and the second time was unbelievable. A BC win on the slop where she bounds down the stretch and catches Winning Colors at the line in a race where she looked like she had no chance. Its a race worth watching multiple times.

I left out the "Mt Rushmore call" with Durkin.....its one for the ages too.

"The Derby winner is loose on the lead"......................"Here comes Personal Ensign unleashing a furious run on the outside!"......"At the 16th pole it looked like Personal Ensign was facing her first defeat, but in those final 110 courageous yards she certainly proved herself a champion this afternoon." Its almost just as good as the race.
