When Frank Sinatra sang “New York, New York,” he may have been on to something.

A movement is afoot to split New York into two regions — upstate and downstate — to acknowledge the gaping philosophical differences and improve representation.

How many does that make now?

See, Obama was actually right, I think we might be up to 57 http://paceadvantage.com/forum/images/smilies/47.gif

All this stuff is silly talk. Why would NY'ers agree to divide the state?

Or Californios, or whereever?

The United States wouldn't agree to state secession either.

As a NYer, I would do anything to get away from the scum bags we have in Albany. That includes joining Canada.

NY is a shot-hile state - bottom of the barrel.
There are no redeeming values in NY.

Big on the conservative inspired threads along with Obama's third term. Some are actually convinced like the followers of Jim Jones, Heaven's Gate and the Order of the Solar Temple.

We seem to have been having a friendly debate for quite some time over which state is the most screwed up. My choice is still my home state of California, where lunacy and total incompetence is practiced as an art form. California in a photo over New York, with several other Blue States competing for the minor awards.

Even though I think this is a long way off, if ever, I hope everyone sees why those on the left are so opposed to this.....lmao

You would think after all the talk from the left about how its the red states bringing us backwards etc etc, they would be all for this.....

I believe it when I see it happen. Any crack pot can get signatures on a piece of paper, but making things happen is a different story.

Not really.

You can make things happen when you have a pen and a phone.

And some of those things are completely unintended, as in consequences.

I resent the fact that this debate is moving forward without a serious consideration of the Sunshine State (or don't you fellas read the newspapers?).

Naw, no chance, Florida would have no chance of even making it into the lower rungs of the super. California and New York come down to the wire together, with California winning the nod in a photo. Illinois is the logical choice to finish right behind the top two, with several other eastern Blue States plus Hawaii also contenders for the minor awards. No Red State would merit even minor contender status in the race for The Most Screwed Up State.

Campaigns for “secession” or a 51st state have been on the rise since the 2012 presidential election — see California, Colorado and Maryland — but the New York movement has a twist.

Instead of splitting New York into two distinct states, advocates want one state controlled by two autonomous regional governments.
Looking over the Constitution today I see nothing to prevent NY from doing this. It's purely an internal matter. The courts would probably insist that each region have an equal population, requiring that the boundary be redrawn after each census, each region get one U.S. senator, and that each region get an equal number of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. NY presently has 27 seats in the U.S. House so which region gets the odd congressional seat? Each region could get 13 seats and 13 congressional districts with the odd seat being statewide. Would the courts buy that.

Then, of course, there's the problem of whether the courts would go along with there being two governors.

Ah yes, Utah, the only state, along with Hawaii, where all forms of gambling are forbidden. :( Have traveled extensively in Utah, the scenery is gorgeous, but for those that wish to Sin, it is a bit difficult. :)

Read not long ago that Utah may loosen up their restrictive liquor laws a bit, but getting a bet down is still virtually impossible within it's borders. To get their gambling fix, residents in the southern part of the state go south on I-15 to Mesquite or even Las Vegas. Those in the SLC area go west across the desert on I-80 to Wendover. Made that trip once, boring, spotting a herd of pronghorn was the highlight. ADWs, of course, are illegal in Utah, although a few guys may have accounts in a risky offshore book.

My son's family (NOT Mormons) live in Murray, just outside of SLC. He goes to the races somewhere in Wyoming. They love it in Utah, incidentally.

I've thought for a while that maybe it's time to gerrymander the entire nation. Our borders today were based on access to water transport, political compromises, wars, things that once were but now aren't all that significant. Do we really need six New England states? Two Dakotas? Does Michigan need its Yooper? My area in SW Ohio has more in common with Louisville and Indianapolis than with Cleveland. And several states probably wouldn't mind annexing parts of Ontario. Things could be a lot more efficient with some basic tinkering. It could be great fun. :D
