How do they do it? I have heard several people, including Andrew Beyer, say that the old-time hall-of-fame trainers didn't have 1/2 the winning % that the super trainers of today have.

Its just experience. Look at a guy like Kirk Ziadie, oats and hay all the way, learned at the knee of the great, paid his dues and now look where that got him. Same thing for Ness, Navarro and Lisa Guerrero, all paid their dues, started at the bottom and are where they are by hard work, talent and guts.

No other way to put it. ;)

Ya know.... I followed the same road....

Worked for top trainers. spent a lifetime in the game.

Somehow I have never had the same degree of success as the aforementioned.

Must be bad luck.
