It's almost time for March Madness. I usually put together a set of ELO ratings for every college team.

You have to handicap a little if you're going to use these. The ratings are relative to the level of competition. In many cases, a strong DII or DIII school can't compete against a weak DI school, but the DII or DIII might have a higher rating than some DI's. But when comparing apples to apples these do pretty well.

I've won my office pool twice in five years. There were about 100 entries last year.

Duke was extremely lucky to beat Md. tonight. Favored by 11 ( not that it matters) but for a 50/50 roll on the rim in the last second they do not win. Md. is just not that good; and Duke was at home.

Duke crushed Pitt, but Pitt almost beat Syracuse.

Shouldn't Duke be ranked higher than Syracuse and Pitt?

AZ got beat by AZ State.

Hell, Miami Heat loses sometimes.

Secretariat got beat, but he was still one of the greatest.

There may be errors in my code, but when I look at my Top 25 and compare them to the AP Top 25 there is not a huge difference. So I think I'm in the ballpark.

Syracuse beat Duke. And Pitt twice.

Minor detail. ;) :D

Still, Pitt almost beat CUSE the other night. Pitt could be developing momentum.

CUSE at home only beat Duke by 2 and gave up 89 points. That doesn't sound like a #1 team to me. On a neutral court Duke could have the advantage.

CUSE at home almost got beat today by NC State! Cuse is definitely vulnerable.

Duke destroyed NC State.

Duke also crushed Pitt on Pitt's court.

I'm not convinced Syracuse should be ranked #1. They're undefeated, which means a lot, but that doesn't mean they're the best.

Patriots were undefeated and lost to Giants in the Super Bowl. Giants had momentum.

How good is Wichita?

IMO Wichita isn't that good... Well not as good as their AP/USA Today ranking indicates. They have played 1 team all season who will be in the NCAA tournament. St Louis. I can name 15-20 teams if given Wichita's schedule would be undefeated right now. Regardless of their seed, Wichita's toughest game of the season will come in their second game of the tournament. It's a lot different when your the favorite and not the dog like last year.

Just because a team "almost" gets beat or loses doesn't mean the other team is better. If you think Creighton is better than Villanova because they beat Villanova in one game... I would say your crazy. On some nights teams are just hot and are better on that night.... But to sit here and say a team like Creighton is better than teams like Nova, Florida and Kansas is absurd. Then on the other hand you have Arizona at 1 but then you have North Dakota State and Stephen F Austin in front of Arizona State who beat Arizona. Meanwhile North Dakota State's best win is against Delaware and Stephen F Austins best win is against Towson...maybe who knows... Their schedule is so bad.

To each their own but you have Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Gonzaga, Creighton, Wichita State, San Diego State, Kentucky, Louisville and UCLA in front of Michigan State... On a neutral court, a healthy Michigan State team would be a favorite against all of those teams.

Right now, Tennessee would have a very good shot. They are 26th in the Pomeroy ratings so that would be a second team. BYU is 55th, so they'd be on the bubble but likely NIT bound. Indiana State is 84th and Alabama not even top 100 so you were pretty close.

Creighton moving out of the Mizzou Valley really hurts the conference. But re: Creighton and Villanova, the Wildcats will get their chance at revenge. But Creighton really kicked their ass all over Villa's home court. We'll see if Nova has made any defensive adjustements to shut down Creighton's shooters. Playing in a new gym doesn't figure to help them.

Good points, ManU918.

My ratings are based on final scores, point differentials and home court advantage. A good team could have a bad night which would knock their rating down. A good team could have an injury which causes them to perform below normal which also knocks their rating down.

So you still have to handicap. My ratings are just indicators. They're like BRIS Power Ratings in the sense that they give you an idea of how good a team is, but they are not the only important factor.

The tricky part about rating college basketball teams, for example, is that a southeast team may never play a northeast team, yet, they both earn a rating. If one team plays a tough schedule and loses a few games they may end up with a lower rating than a team that plays a weak schedule and wins every game. So the question becomes who is the better team? One way to find out is to put them on the court.

In horse racing, you might have an undefeated 3 year old that has won every minor stakes race, earned big speed figures and is undefeated. Then when it faces another 3 year old that has run second in the biggest Grade One races in the country and earned nearly identical speed figures in the KY Derby the horse that finishes 2nd crushes the minor stakes horse.

Our local high school team is in a similar situation this year. They are in Class LL which is made up of smaller schools than Class L. However, our team plays about 50% of its games against larger schools in Class L. We needed 8 wins to qualify for the state tournament. We just got in for the first time in 24 years. I expect the team to do well despite their .500 record because the teams they lost to are all bigger Class L schools. They even beat some Class L schools. So when they play smaller Class LL schools from different areas of the state they should play well. As opposed to Class LL schools with good records who only play Class LL and Class LLL schools.

Even though an undefeated Class LLL school would get a higher rating than a Class L school who has lost 50% of their games the Class L school would probably crush them most of the time. Not always, though. And that's why we play the games or put them on the track.

(Note: I don't make any adjustment for strength of conference. I've tried over the years, but never had much success. It just seems to add noise.)

Correction... The game between Creighton and Villanova last month was not played on Nova's home court. It was played at the Wells Fargo Center which is a much easier game for road opponents. Having said that, Nova is a 2 point dog tonight... I'll be on the ML.

I'm tempted to play the under. I find in the rematch of two conference teams, when the circumstances in game 1 were "unusual" (i.e. the barrage of 3s hit by Creighton), there is an awareness and a major adjustment is made. Maybe the paint won't be guarded as much, but one has to believe the Villanova defenders will be contesting every Creighton 3.

Wichita State is better this year than they were last year and after making the Tournament went on to beat Pitt, Gonzaga, Ohio State and one call from beating Louisville so don't sell them short.

They play very tough defense and are usually slow and deliberate on offense but can get out an run if presented with the opportunity. I have seen every one of their games this year and they are very versatile, well coached and know how to win. Their big 3 players shoot over 80% from the line so down the stretch they can close out games.

If you say they have a weak schedule how is their RPI 6th last time I checked?

On the negative side if either guard (Van Vleet or Baker) go down it's all over. An injury to Early would hurt but not be as devastating as the either of the above two.

After today they move to 27-0:)

RPI is heavily weighted on win/loss record. They may go unbeaten in the regular season but nobody else top 75 (Pomeroy ratings) in the Mizzou Valley. Eventually, they are going to get really tested. The Syracuses, Floridas and Michigan States have a big edge that they've faced plenty of tough opponents. I will be surprised in Wichita State gets past the field of 16.

That's what I thought last year (not getting past the Sweet 16) and it cost me a lot of money:( Time will tell.
