in a little over two months VD will kick off its 61st year of racing....Im hearing rumblings of some big changes at the Miracle Mile

I wouldn't expect the windows to be open in the grandstands judging from this winter and the areas current snow pack but its sure to HOT up in there anyhow  for more than a few reasons

Anyone plan on attending?
I Can't wait- CANT WAIT!

*meanwhile, im enjoying the winter in upstate ny

I like the All Star Driver competition. Pretty cool to see something like that. They do a good job getting the drivers out there and interacting with fans.

Not a bad gig being the only 7/8 track in NY.

Vernon Downs was the harness track I visited quite alot in the Summer and Fall of 1969. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights ,,, dinner and the races :)

I have many memories of winnin and losin at the downs, as well...1969 as well,,,maybe I saw you there and didn't even know it....

I always loved the view of the green pasture as the backdrop to the backstretch....Good country to spend time in...I use to stay at a cheap motel at Sylvan Beach on Lake Oneida... Miss the trips up there...

I was up there a couple of years ago visiting an old friend, we went to VD, and found that it hadn't changed all that much thru the years....The Casino at the Turning Stone was kind to me as well....Won a $500 JP on the slotz....

I remember the 1/4-mile straightway from the start line, at the old 3/4 mile configuration...Jack Rabbit starts back then...

I play there online now....I didn't play there for awhile after they changed the config to a 1-miler from the former 3/4's, but the past several years, I finally got a handle on the ole-place, and fared much better than in previous years, as a result...

the end:

ah yes, the Chute! wish they still started that way...could be their lil "niche" :D

iv patronized the casino once: pulled my sled up for valet parking in a snowstorm only to find out they didn't have table games....
right back to simulcast I went :D

oh wait, they have "dollar dog" day in the casino or something good/cheap so I walked through a few times but couldn't fathom playing a one armed bandit while I (thought) had a decent shot interpreting the program pages.

don't care for the way the casino is over there with no view of the track whatsoever either.....ew, but that bar over there gets hoping once the races cease.

CANT WAIT!

I was there the night that the lights went out on NYSS finals night a few years ago. The lights on the racetrack never did come all the way back on.

I remember them coming out of the chute on the old 3/4 mile track - they had to negotiate the banking of the main 3/4 mile oval when they came out of the chute.

Michael Chamberlain revealed in his interview with Jason Beem that he will be calling the races at VD this summer. He's a heck of an announcer, but I have never heard him call a harness race. Anyone who has watched any racing from Vernon over the past 5 years (or 20 years, for that matter) will appreciate hearing a new voice.

I did a double take when I read that Jim Moran, who has called the races at Vernon since 1964, will no longer be the announcer there. I can find no story about this change, other than the interview of Mr. Chamberlain conducted by Jason Beem.

I do look forward to hearing a new voice at Vernon Downs.

I have never seen a tailgate party in the parking lot of Vernon Downs in all of the years that I have been going there but what a great idea. The way its going you may be grilling with snowflakes in the air in four weeks.

but there will be racing at VD and when it starts ill be there at the finish line to kick it off

This latest storm in all liklihood will be the last of the big storms to hit this area. I'm saying this while knocking on wood and crossing my fingers though. It will be interesting to see what the track looks like especially if we don't get many nice sunny warmer days by April 11th. It's a month away and you would think that it will at least start getting a bit warmer as opening night approaches but then again it is central New York. Here's hoping for a warm up in the weather and things to go on as scheduled.

cecil127
03-12-2014, 08:07 PM
id think they need at least a month to tune it up.....if it was 60* from 4/1 til opening night it'd still be a major undertaking.

who remembers the ice storm in april that closed the city of Oswego a few years back? that was interesting

cecil127
03-15-2014, 09:30 AM
throw another couple inches on top of the slop that's already there today and you've got a perfect recipe for a "warm & clear" opening day at VD....

Warm by the fireplace and

Clear up to your @$$ :p

cecil127
03-24-2014, 04:15 PM
barely going to get above freezing (and only for a few hours at that) everyday til Thursday...

18 days til the opener? :faint:

I said on 3/10 there would be a postponement....and I KNOW my upstate ny

stay tuned....as many of us ARE!

Just received this email

Vernon, NY --- Vernon Downs will conduct its first qualifiers for the 2014 racing season on Tuesday (April 1) at 10:30 a.m. The entry box will close Monday (March 31) at 10 a.m.

Three more qualifiers are scheduled prior to opening night (April 11): Friday (April 4) at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday (April 8–Press Night) at 7 p.m. and Friday (April 11) at 10:30 a.m. The entry box for each qualifier will close at 10 a.m. the day before.

Vernon Downs requires a negative Coggins Test and EHV-1 vaccination certificate within one year. Horses shipping in must have a current Health Certificate within the last 30 days. This is required only for your first start.

Horsemen are also reminded that a racing application is required for everyone regardless of stabling on the grounds or not. To obtain one visit our website at www.vernondowns.com.

03-25-2014, 07:14 PM
I don't know cecil, I drove by the track the other day and it really doesn't look that bad for a postponement to opening night. Upstate NY is going to skirt this latest storm and with the upcoming days looking better in terms of temps and weather, I think they should be a go on the 11th. The tracks these days can take a lot of moisture and gone are the days at Vernon when you'd see a sloppy track condition spit out times in the 220's. Those were the days.

cecil127
03-26-2014, 09:06 AM
freeze/thaw night/day will play havoc BUT if the track is ready and opening day is indeed on the 11th I will be there with bells on at the wire for the first couple races....then palin' around with a few friends who are also very anxious for the VD opener

stay tuned!

Still alive in the showdown in 68th place with 3 wins and 1 third. I've never played in a contest like this one where payouts are not considered a factor in the standings. This contest calls for some basic handicapping skills and a whole lot of luck. I basically look for this before analyzing a likely in the money horse.

Short fields - Since you merely have to finish at least 3rd to advance to the next day, a shorter than average field size improves your chances mathematically

Coupled entries - Having more than one runner in a race improves your chances also. They gave us all a gimmie last week with 5 horses as a coupled entry in an 8 horse field

No trotting races - Eliminating trotting races is a must in a contest such as this. Crazy stuff can happen in trotting races and you can never predict a break or predict that there may be interference in a race costing you an in the money finish. Remember, you can choose umpteen amount of winners in a row but it's that one costly break or costly interference that could do you in. Of course these things happen in pacing races also but it is more likely in trotting races so why take the chance.

Vernon however doesn't make is easy for us tonight carding 8 trotting races and only 1 pacing race.

speaking of "paying attention"...how about telling the announcer that the 7th race stretch is just that....not before the 6th race call to the post. :D  :D

All solid points harness2008, GL to you and Edzone and anyone else here who's still in it.

The robot's alive but has never been listed in the top 100 (tied for 83rd)

Going with 7yo Restless Yankee tonite off that new LTM last out.

A couple of 8/1s from the 8 hole I like tonite....

I am also using the same method as you said.
Yesterday all race is trots except one pace. At first I pick race 1 Avalicious. But I see race 2 with only 5 starters. So I pick House Money in race 2. It ends up he only finish 3rd :( So I now drop down to 52nd.

Looks like two big weekends coming up at Vernon Downs. EBC elims this weekend and the final next Sunday.

NYSS also this Friday. Looks like Tim Tetrick will be in town. I'll probably make the trip as well.
