Well done.

No, I've deleted a few of SRU's posts while he is still typing them!

As for Penn, I have no idea. I have to assume the track is the problem, not the weather. The same goes for Oaklawn. A thawing track is not fun to deal with for the superintendent.

Oaklawn used to start their meet in Feb, but I guess about 10yrs ago they began running in Jan,
They lose a lot of days every year it seems...I think opening day was delayed a few years back.
Wish they would begin in Feb. They take a lot of horses from FG.

Personally, I wish the OP meet was longer than it is. One of my very best profitable tracks. That part of the country, during the winter, is subject to some severe weather, lots of snow, freezing rain, and ice.

If the track cancels, does the casino save on purse money paid out, or does the money get added to purses at a later date?

If the former, the problem with the track is probably is that horses run on it.

If they began Feb 1, 2014, they still would have lost these 3 1/2 days.

There are no reported works from Penn for the past four days, so I suspect the track is a total mess.

there was a pretty bad ice storm maybe tuesday or wednesday night. my guess would be that there are chunks of ice in the track that could be dangerous to the jockeys? maybe tonyk@hsh will see the thread and let us know the official reason?

Over 750,000 in Pennsylvania were without power.
Still tens of thousands today have none.
I suspect horse racing is pretty low on the list of things to do there this week.

You could make the case that Penn (and CT for that matter) should just close down from mid-Dec to mid-Feb, but your sig line makes no sense as it implies there's no reason for the cancellations. You honestly believe that? Why haven't there been in any works at Penn in four days?

If the former, the problem with the track is probably is that horses run on it. Most places have deal that states a set % of the profits or revenue goes to purses(it is probably in the law that allowed the casino games or slots) . The already inflated purses become larger or they add a race to other cards if they have enough horses to fill it. The Racino doesn't get to keep money.

If there's no snow, rain, wind and it isnt too cold, i dont see the problem. Is weather dot com wrong?

It's been mentioned several times in this thread that the track was/is unsafe due to bad weather earlier in the week. Just because it's not bad weather now doesn't mean it's safe to run.

Cancellation due to track condition. A lot of water and ice in track resulting from ice storm on Tuesday. No training at all since Tuesday. Track has been cycling through thawing and refreezing. It has improved a lot over the past 24 hours but was deemed unsafe this morning.
First day of training will be Sunday morning but there will be no clocker, thus no workouts.

Good info, Goren. That said, I would imagine the racino track would lean toward cancellation as they save money not turning on the lights.

The hard freeze, followed by thaw - freeze cycles plays absolute havoc on racing surfaces. Especially the ones that aren't specifically designed for cold weather racing.
