According to the PA Gaming Commission report, gross revenue from slot machines at the 12 casinos fell 8.7% in January of this year to $171,786,456 compared to the $188,244,599 in gross revenue generated in January 2013.
Hopefully, this is a function of the unusually cold and snowy weather in the Keystone State.
Otherwise, another purse cut is coming to challenge those who only live once.

For a moment, I thought PA had slots here. :D
The "slots will save our tracks" is over. Too many tracks have them, and too many Native Americans, riverboats, land-based, etc. have them. There's only so much money to go around.
Wasn't the weather particularly bad this year?

Yes, the weather around PA was bad but the slot revenues have been plummeting for over a year now and will only get worse with the casinos in Ohio that have opened and will be opening later this year.

Yes, January was brutal here. We set several records for all time cold. We had a few nights below zero, and many days it did not get out of the single digits. More of the same to start February, as today its warmer (mid 20's) but snowing (up to a foot in spots).
Makes me want to hibernate just thinking about it.

Just pointing out it almost had to be some factor.

Forgot about Ohio getting slots this year that will drop revenue even more wouldn't you think?

Blame the weather if you want, but this is just the beginning. As I've said before, the Racino model is obsolete:
I've been saying this, here, for years. This the future of slots:

From the press release:
"It is likely that the amount of revenue generated was negatively impacted by the significant amounts of snow and extreme cold weather that affected all parts of Pennsylvania in January and has continued into February," says Gaming Control Board Executive Director Kevin O'Toole."
Lead story on news tonight, weather. Number 1 news item this year, weather. News flash, airlines will report lower earnings this quarter. Record flight cancellations in first 5 weeks.
I am participant in national economic survey. Today, January results were released. Guess what primary comment was? Yep, weather and its impact.

i spent $2500 this year on a sand and ice mixture. i just got done doing my walkway and driveway and i don't have enough for the next snowstorm that is coming friday. this storm was a bad one because it became very wet and heavy, by the morning it will be all ice if the temperature goes below freezing. i am hoping to score more sand tomorrow, but i am told that home depot is all out and the good stuff that i had isn't around either.
anyone that went into the ice melt business this year became an instant millionaire.

Wasn't the weather particularly bad this year?
Yes. For example, the eastern half of PA just went through its second major winter storm in three days.
