Oaklawn - 1

It has been a while, about a month in fact. And while I've not been posting, the website is there each day. For Saturday, a few stakes of note on both coasts with a few horses to point out from Slew's rather voluminous listing.

At Gulfstream Park for example, the warm up act for the Hutcheson Stakes is the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint. This, a 75K top speed scramble on the grass features 11 entrants including Tightend Toughdown, who Slew says is one of the two to look for in this contest. You might remember him from Belmont Park, where on 5/15/13 he ran about a 1/2 second off of Gantry's track record for 6 furlongs on the turf. The rail was out at 18 feet that day and lore has it that anytime that occurs, front running speed rules. Obviously, this is something that has not escaped this gelding by Pure Precision, who's grand-daddy was Montbrook. Short career not withstanding, Montbrook could flat out run and finished his short 8 race career winning the Riva Ridge Stakes - Gr. 3, the Jersey Shore Budweiser Breeders' Cup Stakes and the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes - Gr. 3. Tightend Touchdown has done little wrong since that day at Belmont and while 3-1 on the ML, might not be caught in this one. Castellano (30%) rides.

In the Hutcheson, we're looking for Trail Blaze to rebound from his effort on Jan 4 in the Spectacular Bid, and for Gambler's Ghost to put in another good run off of his maiden win on New Year's day in Hallendale.

At Aqueduct, 4 stakes make for a cold but interesting program hard by Jamaica Bay, with Stapping Groom being the standout in the Toboggan Stakes for David Jacobson who is making this meet his personal playground. A quarter crack has been a problem for this one, and he may not go. If he does, this horse is not playable, even if he holds his ML at 3-5. Which he won't. But we may look to use a Slew single in race 5, Unbridled Logic, to double if we can. Money talks, so we'll wait and see if there is any value to be had. Leading jock Irad Ortiz, Jr. rides Strapping Groom, a colt by Johannesburg. In his absence, check out Dad's Caps.

Plenty more where this came from, so check out the rest in the daily racing file available at the website, if you so desire. Just click the link below.

Enjoy the Saturday racing...good luck and good 'capping!
