I always love seeing rivalries in sports. Especially those were they competitors remain friendly. One rivalry I like was that of Affirmed and Alydar. Two top fighters who alone could beat up on the competition but when put in the same field the results were mixed. It was kinda like seeing Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali slug it out in the ring.

You've already hit Affirmed/Alydar.

I'll add Easy Goer and Sunday Silence.

I have been part of this discussion rivalry of RA vs Z. We don't know and we won't know. I think the people of both parties are going to want to see a big rivalry between the offspring of both historic mares. To sacrifice the good of an animal just to see a bitter feud that was never there in the first place just to satisfy some fantasy of some crazy horse fans is just down right wrong.

If we are going to go there, how about Sarah Nelson vs. Lil Sarah?

Only faced each other once, but pretty interesting confrontation.

Damascus and Dr. Fager

Damascus and Dr. Fager might be the best rivalry in modern racing history because they did it under handicap conditions at the older male level with two of the best trainers to ever train on the NYRA circuit "pushing the buttons"; and let's not forget that Buckpssser was there also to keep the two of them (Damascus and the Good Doctor) honest.

It may not be a rivaliry but I think Onion beating Secretarait 2x was the most rewarding to a horse to me.It shocked the racing world!!

Onion didn't beat him twice.

Onion didn't beat him twice.
He was possibly confusing him with Prove Out, the other horse (besides Onion) who beat Secretariat after he won the Triple Crown.

The real rivalry was between Secretariat and races beginning with the letter "W". His only defeats as a three-year-old were in the Wood, the Whitney, and the Woodward.

Correction to my previous post:

Secretariat avenged his defeat by Onion when he subsequently defeated Onion in the Marlboro, so that could have been considered a recurring rivalry (although Onion did not win twice).

Another possible rivalry would be Secretariat (or, more properly, Lucien Laurin) versus Allen Jerkens, who trained both Onion and Prove Out.
