View Full Version : HandHeld/Pocket Computers
Anyone familiar with one of these hand-held or pocket computers that you could put a program on?
I'm thinking there must be something between a laptop and a hand held that you could put DOS programs onto, or maybe even just PDF reader to look at PP's on the road.
I know Jim Bradshaw used to have some kind of a HP computer the size of a hard cover book that had a screen large enough to look at Sartin programs on, but I can't find anything like it now.
Thanks in advance.

Sony has that little Vaio....Toshiba had the Libretto (I have one of those....very sweet)....I don't think Toshiba makes the Librettos anymore.
HP used to have (years and years ago), a pocket PC that fit easily in a suit pocket that could run DOS...I used to run the orignal version of my program on that at the track. It was very small, and very slow...but it did the job very nicely at the time....

Tom,
I used to write all the Sartin programs for the little Sharp handheld computers. They were limited (about 8-10 K of memory) and slow, but they would run basic programs. I don't think they are still on the market. I still have a couple if you want one.
The little notebook computer Jim had was a regular PC, just very small. It was from Gateway, but again I don't think they are still offering it, though I may be wrong. You could check easily enough on the internet. The smallest computers I have seen lately have been from Sony. They have a VIAO that is the size of a large (textbook size) book. Very light, and only about an inch thick. It comes with a P-III chip and costs about $1500 I think. Not really in the market, so not up on current prices and processors.

Best place to find cheap mini Sony (Picturebook) is at www.ubid.com for about $1K.
Librettos are best found on Ebay for $350-$400.
I've seen both in action and the batteries really do last 2.5 hours or more.
Thanks for the replies.
Dick,
I still have my Sharp PC and it still has your 3rd fraction on it, as well as the original "Energy" and Synergism programs. Nice thing about that version of Energy - enter the horses, then wait 10 minutes.
Gave you time to second guess yourself~G~

Tom:
I have a Sharp Pocket Computer PC-1360. It is about 7" x 2.5". I think Dick Schmidt still has some programs for it. It runs DOS programs, but is limited on memory. but it has 1-8 K byte memory card and 1-16 K byte memory card.
If you decide that's what you want, I would sell it very reasonable.

Myhorse,
The 1360 was a fine little machine, but it does not run DOS programs. It needs custom Sharp Basic programs. These could be translated from other Basic programs, but had to be in Sharp Basic. The only way to get a program into the 1360 was to either type it in or load it from a cassette tape using a printer/cassette interface. I do still have most of the Sartin programs on tape somewhere; I wrote most of them or translated them for the Sharp.
Haven't touched a handheld in years, but I still remember them fondly. They put a lot of money in my pocket for a lot of years.

The first time I went to a Sartin seminar it was in Albany
and all the Pirco guys had these neat little radio shack pocket computers. So I bought one, then when i went back the next year, they all had the Sharp versions.
So I bought one, and when I went back the next year, they all had laptops with one disk drive. So I bought one, and when I went back the next year, they all had hard drives. Seems like I was always one program and one computer behind.
