If a track has a big race sponsered by XXX, with a purse of $100K, how much of that is donated by XXX?

Does all $100K come from XXX or just a portion?

I would think the sponsor is just paying to put the name on the race, not to add to the purse. In most cases probably just income for the tracks.

so nothing in race comes from XXX?

just like an advertising fee for naming rights to XXX stadium?

It's usually just a straight up advertising thing. Purse amounts have generally been set before securing the sponsor and can have an effect on securing the sponsor. So you would get a sponsorship for races paying $500,000 and up more easily than those of lesser amounts. Carries prestige.

It is not the money value that the racetrack is getting from the sponsor, but the intrinsic value of the sponsor's name or product.

Tracks also have the potential for a trophy presentation by an adult film star.

I would think it is more about the money. Otherwise, they'd be letting sponsors put names on races for free.

On the Dubai card last Thursday they had a horse named Robert The Painter, who was coming out of a race at York (GB) named:
This Isn't The Stan James Champion Hurdle Stakes

he has also run in the:
Iphone, Ipad, Ipad Mini Handicap Ayreshire Stks
Totequadpot Four Places In Four Races Handicap Stks

Some of those races in England have very weird names. Wonder what the sponsor situation is over there.

I think a track somewhere needs to snatch up for one of its races the intrinsic value of the "1-800-SAFE-AUTO" brand.

Almost all races in GB and Ireland are sponsored. Sometimes whole cards sponsored by one sponsor (very common with bookmakers, with names like the above that advertise special bets or offers by said bookmakers), but you will also see races at the smaller tracks sponsored by local business... like the " Joe Blow and Sons Hardware Store Maiden". This obvisouly gives those businesses a chance to advertise their wares, but also they get a day out at the races for the business owner and his friends in the prime seats, wined and dined by the track, and the chance to have their picture taken presenting some trophy or prize to the owners of the winning horse.

For example, here is the card for next Thursday at Gowran Park in Ireland....
1:15 Nugent Spirit 25 Horsebox Hurdle 2m Card
1:45 Four Star Langton House Hotel Maiden Hurdle 2m
2:15 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle (Grade 2) 3m
2:45 Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Hurdle 2m1f
3:15 Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase (Grade A) 3m1f
3:45 PMF Accountants Beginners Chase 2m2f
4:15 P.J. Foley Memorial INH Flat Race 2m

Everyone of those, with the possible exception of the bumper, the last race, is sponsored by a business, some of them big names, like Goffs (http://www.goffs.com/) the bloodstock/sales agencey (think Fasig Tipton or Keeneland) and others by smaller local businesses, Nugents (they make horse trailers (http://nugentengineering.com/products/spirit-25/) ) or like the Langton House Hotel (http://www.langtons.ie/) , a local hotel/resort.

Not really; most of those situations are "win-win" whereas the marketeer expands its product to a "captive group of consumers" and the racetracks gets wider exposure through the distribution of the sponsor's products or services. The NFL does it better than any sports enity with golf being a good runner-up.

It is is all about marketing and advertising.
