"Winning Ponies" Presents Eclipse Award Writer Jennie Rees and Columnist / Handicapper Richard Eng

Jennie Rees, the veteran horse racing writer for The Courier-Journal, was named the 2013 Kentucky Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. It is her second time receiving the award.

For the last 29 years Jennie Rees has been associated with the Louisville Courrier-Journal as a turf writer. She was a member and former president of the National Turf Writers Association. Rees has been in The Courier-Journal sports department since 1981, covering horse racing since 1983. She is a three-time individual winner of racing’s Eclipse Award for outstanding writing — in 1988 for magazine writing, 1993 for newspaper writing and 2011 for news/enterprise. She also was an integral part of the C-J team that won the 2008 multimedia Eclipse. Rees also is a five-time winner of a Red Smith Award for writing on the Kentucky Derby.

Our second guest is no stranger to this show. Richard Eng is a columnist/handicapper for the Las Vegas Review-Journal and author of "Horse Racing for Dummies & The Guide to U.S. Casinos and Racinos." You can follow him on Twitter @RichEng4ProPick. Last week at Santa Anita Rich had 9 listed winners, not all were top choices, but the early Pick 5 paid $1,127 and he received a couple e-mails from readers who cashed in off of his selections.

We have a big Saturday at Gulfstream and Fair Grounds, but we are just going to pick one major race at each. The $200,000 Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes for 3-year-ols at Fair Grounds and the $400,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Park. In Rich’s neck of the woods we will cover the $200,000 Grade 2 Strub Stakes at Santa Anita and 'Cap the $100,000 California Derby at Golden Gate.
