Seems the third country to mount an effort at rescue could be the charm:
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC Australia) has requested the US Coast Guard’s Polar Star icebreaker to assist the vessels MV Akademik Shokalskiy and Xue Long which are beset by ice in Commonwealth Bay.

Let's keep our collective fingers crossed.

How much is this going to cost the US taxpayer?

Probably less than Michelle's extra long vacation.

I will gladly kick in a few extra bucks.
We do these things because we can.

The scientists that started this whole mess should chip in for gas.

1.3 million gallons of diesel is what the Star carries.

Where's HCAP with his graphs to tell us that sea ice is at an all time low? Reality is that global sea ice is above average, but the MSN or HCAP won't tell you that. Govts need to start charging for these boondoggle escapades or they'll continue. With modern equipment, there was no reason to ever be stuck in the ice. It's not like anyone with a computer couldn't pull up ice coverage and thickness anywhere in the world. Idiots!

Think about this. These people went on an expedition to retrace the route of a FAILED expedition from a 100 years ago. And they succeeded!!!

It is useless to tell you gentlemken for the 100th time how long term trends disprove all your heavens-to-Betsy pearl clutching fainting spells about AGW.

Check out parts of the world going through summer.

I read a few days ago that the captain was worried about the wind change and didn't want the scientists to go ashore on a 4 hour excursion. They insisted and by the time they got back the rest is history.

That sounds like the basis for a 60's-style TV show: Gilligan's Continent :p
