HE PLAYED A DOZEN YEARS FOR EIGHT DIFFERENT TEAMS;
HE HOMERED IN THE SERIES FULFILLING HIS DREAMS.

A DURABLE INFIELDER...HE PLAYED MANY A GAME;
YET HE WAS FIRST IN SOMETHING FOR WHICH HE FELT SHAME.

WHATEVER YOU CALL IT: CHRONIC, MARY JANE, WEED OR POT;
THIS CALIFORNIA NATIVE SAID THE ANSWER WAS “NOT”.

HE'D PLAYED ALONGSIDE “SLATS” IN THE ALL-STAR GAME;
BUT AFTER “THE INCIDENT” HE WAS NEVER THE SAME.

HE WAS QUITE A FIELDER AND COULD HIT SOME, TOO;
HE'D SMACK MANY A HOMER BEFORE HE WAS THROUGH.

YET, HE’S BEST REMEMBERED FOR THAT DAY IN "MOTOR CITY";
IT WOULD BE A DAY IN WHICH HE'D FEEL GREAT PITY.

WHO AM I?

If you can come up with the answer, I'll send you twenty (20) Topps 1980/1981 football cards in good condition. All you need to do is send me a private message on this forum with the correct answer and your name and mailing address and I'll send you out the trading cards. Or, if you're not interested in the cards, post your answer here.

neat thread idea - if I were any kind of writer I would attempt this, but it would be a disaster.

This is shameless self-promotion, but years ago, I wrote 162 of these, one for every day of the baseball season. I was able to market about 40 of them with radio station WHDH (no longer in existence) in Boston back in the mid- to late-1980s. The rhymes aired weekday mornings. The riddles were co-sponsored by The Boston Globe newspaper. The first person who called in with the correct answer was awarded a tee-shirt that said "I Solved The Red Sox Riddle of the Day."
