It was a unanimous (9-0) decision, but allowed the Federal Government one year to set alternatives under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Couldn't allow those whacky states, like Colorado, to get the jump on tourism!

I've always found these laws interesting. Abortion is illegal because the Supreme Court said that a woman can do what she wants with her body but prostitution is illegal? And another thing that puzzles me, if prostitution is illegal, then how can pornography be legal. Aren't they the same thing? Prostitutes get paid for having sex with strangers, porn stars get paid for having sex with strangers while it's being filmed. I don't get it.

Porn is different because it's a "published" product for mass consumption. It's a first amendment issue. Similar to a newspaper or movie. Prostitution is an in person "transaction" that also impacts public health. The "transaction portion complicates things because of the commerce side of it. The public health interest is even more convoluted, legally.

Two completely different areas of law apply, in the U.S.

Some feel everyone has the right to survive, I do not share this thought.
Pagan ways are not good for the family unit or the American dream. What Canada does is of little value here.

I don't have a problem with prostitution being illegal, but I don't think it should be prosecuted. There are dangerous criminals out there like the thugs who shot up people at that mall in Jersey the other day. Our tax dollars shouldn't be used for busting and prosecuting people who charge or pay for sex, especially since there is no way that prostitution will ever be stopped. It's just another big waste of tax payers money.

Prostitution is not illegal in Canada and has not been for years.

Living off the avails of prostitution is illegal (pimping).
Until Friday, communicating for the purposes of prostitution was illegal.
Until Friday, running a brothel was illegal.
The Supreme Court gave the Canadian Government 1 year to rewrite the laws re: prostitution, communication, and brothels.
