Why Smarty Jones is my Derby horse in March. Well, I like the horse, for a number of reasons:

1. He caught my eye when I was looking at the PP's they gave out
before the first future wager. He was listed as one of the field.
I liked him enough then to put him in my Derby fantasy contest
stable.

2. He ran one of the highest Beyer's for a 2 yr. old last year.

3. Not only has he carried forward his 2 yr. old form, he's improved.

4. Undefeated in 5 starts.

5. Now this is not something I would normally bet off of, it's just
something I find interesting. Back in Feb., when the first early
Derby PP's were printed, his Prime Power figure was 2nd only to
Halfbridled's! And that was off only 3 starts. The reason I don't like
Prime Power is that it seems to me it puts too much emphasis on
class. Yet Smarty Jones had gotten the highest Prime Power for 3
yr. old males off of 2 races at Philly Park, one a statebred stakes,
and an ungraded stakes on the inner dirt (The Count Fleet.) In case
you haven't got it still, Read the Footnotes (who at the time had not
yet started this year) was next, 1.6 points lower. Halfbridled was 4.8
points higher. Crazy.....

6. He knows how to rate off the pace.

7. He ran the fastest Rebel since Demon's Begone. They had
better get private security for him....

8. His pace figs consistantly show a big middle move. Big middle
moves win the Kentucky Derby more often than not.

9. He's inbred to Bold Ruler x3.

10. He had a starting gate training accident in which he reared up
and hit his head. He actually was in pretty bad shape and nearly
lost an eye. The vet who treated him says he was a model patient.
That is a mark of high intelligence.

11. He's a February foal.

12. He's got a real fairy tale life story

Great posting. I liked the horse when I first heard his name ...
Names mean something! Recall Menefee ? Nobody does..other
than the folks who bet him. Dumb name :)

If he starts in the Derby I think he would be the first Philly Park based horse ever to run in the Derby. John Servis has never had a horse even close to this. The owner says he will stick with Stewart Elliott all the way. If he wins the Arkansas Derby, and one of the big guns is available, it will be quite a temptation.

No, I don't think a "top trainer with Triple Crown experience" would
have done a better job. I think a trainer like Baffert or Lucas or
whoever would have managed to find a way to ruin the horse by
now. Well, by the Derby anyway. This trainer is doing just fine.
There's nothing wrong with the races he's entered the horse in.
Maybe after Smarty Jones wins the Derby they will finally upgrade
the races, they've deserved it for awhile.

The jockey is a little tougher question. Let's face it, this guy's just a
so-so rider. Otherwise, he'd already be riding in NY or wherever.
But, he's the only rider the horse has had and he has done well.
And quite frankly, Bailey's slipping. So is Day. Krone's hurt, P. Val
won't have his license back in time - and he will get it back, they
ALWAYS give it to him.... Prado would be my choice of a rider. But
will it make a difference who rides him? I don't know... ask me
after the race. ;-)

That is great work ..thanks ... We shall see... I am going to
send the info to a lady I know...who is theee expert in breeding
in the world LOL. Last year she kept saying that Empire Maker
was a " little light " ... Should be a fascinating Derby since there
is no obvious pick...very little Buzz... and horses from all over the
place. Cheers .. ..

He caught my eye with his score in the Count Fleet. Horse just makes it look so easy every time out, except in the Southwest, when he was actually challenged in deep stretch. I like the horse a lot.

If he wins the Arkansas Derby, Baffert will probably have one of his clients buy him...lol :D

I can tell you that Smarty is the only horse I have seen that has actually made me think he is a Derby Prospect. Some of the others just don't look good, or at least for more than one race, they don't look good. But it is a pretty crappy mess all around. But we have seen this before I guess.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone else pops up in the next two weeks or so.

He would probably like to, but he'd have to come up with a chunk of change, considering Smarty would be looking at a $5 mil. bonus should he follow up with a win in the KD.

I find it mind boggling that not one other legitimate Derby contender chose to go through Oaklawn with that kind of money dangling in front of their face. All the horsemen (it seems) complain of financial straits, yet when offered a shot at $5,000,000 they stay away in droves.

Having seen all the preps to date, the one horse that seemed to control his races above all others is Smarty Jones. Was pleased to see he is not yet the favorite in the futures.

Hi all...

Just got back from Vegas and actually included the Smarty one in my Derby bets... got 12-1 on that one... also got 8-1 on Wimbledon... 8-1 on Eddington and 75-1 on Halfbridled for Bubbles.. and in a final grand gesture that illustrates a $5 bill absolutely FLYING out of my pocket when I saw the list... I got a rousing 225-1 on Saratoga County, who I liked a lot in his last time out...
