Gentlemen, please. Tell me I didn't hear the words, "actually I'm going to win every race" come out of this guy's mouth.

Pipe dream, Lord have mercy!!

I have Dish Network, I'm dying to find out if I have this channel somewhere among all of them. Esquire channel? New to me. This will be really fun. On the serious side, maybe it'll bring in some "new money". That disposable income thing.

Of course there is a way he can win every race by betting on every horse
to win in each race. Usually this is a loosing proposition, however, for a
Million Bucks, I'm not so sure. It stands to reason he will not be betting on
just one horse per race to win. It sounds like this channel will get lots of
people out to the track real fast. I wish it were free over the air channel
but probably won't. I will not pay to watch TV.

Clocker and Nick, I just turned to the Esq. channel.

If the show that is on now is any measure of their programming line up--the new "Horseplayers" is in serious trouble without even the first episode aired.

OMG!! Where do they get these people? ... L.A.Realtors

I just found it in the nether regions on FIOS. 160

It's a non HD channel which is the reason I didn't even know I have it.

This should be fun for about ten minutes

Showing people losing their ass as they did in the preview, that'll bring em out!

Another unrealistic hyped look at the game

I know. Didn't you like that other line... "in terms of the money. Its gone."

Poor us, it just never gets any better.:lol::lol:

And JeffP is right, dumb wagering it down ain't gonna make it better either.

This has got to be good for horse racing. The channel is not the best, but poker craze started because a program on the Travel Channel. Egomaniac viewers will ignore the losers and think with a little study "I can do better than the winners". This kind of thing that horse racing has needed to promote the game for sometime. Hopefully some ADWs will be among the sponsors.

Horseplayers need to be presented to the public as competitive and half-way interesting as opposed to miserable at home in front of a computer and bitching about everything.

Sure, it would be bad if all of the cast ends up losing, but as long as one or two of them do good then that would be a positive for attracting some competitive, new blood. I am sure the executive producers know all of this. I watched the trailer and it looked pretty good. I think I will pull for Beychok and Conte, the guy with the giant magnifying glass. One of the young guns should come in 3rd for the younger viewers.

After reading H4C's blog link... this reads more interesting. I'm not a fan of any reality show, not even "Survivor". But this, I need to do. Need to try and hang with the 10 episodes.

Bravado is often prayer in disguise. Reality, on the other hand, is ever so humbling.

Bravado is often prayer in disguise. Reality, on the other hand, is ever so humbling. I think the producers did a good job with the cast, but if they get another season they need more than 6 cast members and definitely more "variety".

"Survivor" has lasted for a long, long time. Think of how many people have been inspired to go in their backyard and eat earthworms and try to build a fire after watching that show. If the producers edit some decent stories, remembering that everyone cannot win (that would be an infomercial) and everyone cannot lose (that would be an after-school special), there is a chance with good casting into the future that this type of show could be an excellent marketing tool. I like this.

Ch 191....
He IS going to win every race.....
It's easy to do that when one bets every live horse under 50-1.
Ya know what...I'd rather hit 3 of 6 and walk out with a profit for the day than hit 10 of 10 and leave with that empty feeling one gets when the day was real chalky and just invested a ton of money for very little return.
I've never done a handicapping contest, so I have no idea how they work.
I assume contests are very different from a regular day when the goal is positive return on investment.

Notice it premiers on a Tuesday Night. When there is not a single huge ratings grabbing show on network tv.
I will give it a shot.
Wanna bet there will be at least one character on the show that is a jerk?
One the viewers love to hate?

Spaah, I'd rather cash only three as well. Either way, it beats walking out of the track as "Whizz" said of one's empty pockets ... with "rabbit ears." Or was it, "dog ears"?

And this is the very reason I cannot bear this show. It is gross, I cannot stomach it--worms, bugs, etc. Plus, these people never bathe, yet they're surrounded by water. :bang:

The only fire that might be built on "Horseplayers" is torching one's DRF on the apron at Big A after being DQ'd. ... I hope it doesn't get this ugly, gentlemen. I really do.

Can any of you cats in the know tell me if that is Michelle Yu playing the part of a serious punter?

Any reviews on this yet?

Nice. i just got Esquire channel on Comcast recently as a free add on. Can't wait to watch this docuseries. I just hope it isn't something with too much fluff added and that it isn't too secretive by the horseplayers and that they actually uncover/explain their methods and knowledge of being in tournaments. This should be exciting.

I also miss Luck on HBO and Jockeys on Animal Planet. I'm glad someone thought enough about our great game to have cameras follow some good horseplayers around the country to different tourneys and show them in a good light (hopefully):) .

No kidding. They definitely need some girls in there. I kinda always thought the ones on HRTV were just there to look pretty (which is pretty sexist of me, considering) and then I saw Michelle Yu pick a 70-1 BOMB that came in a while back.

(And yeah, that's her in the trailer. I just watched it.)

Ch 191....
I've never done a handicapping contest, so I have no idea how they work.
I assume contests are very different from a regular day when the goal is positive return on investment.

The format is usually simple. Most times the scoring is $2 to win and place. If the horse pays 10.60 to win and 4.40 to place you get 15 dollars or "points". Some will throw an exacta into the game, usually its a straight bet. Capital OTB does this sometimes. There is usually a cap on all payoffs, 20-1 for win and 20 bucks for place, 50 bucks for an exacta. This is not always the case but most contests have caps. Knowing the scoring rules is huge but the big catch is they tell you what races you HAVE to play or how many you must play, sometimes from which track too. You have to have a huge day to win....forget about making a little profit and calling it a "good day". You usually have to have at least one "home run" horse or hit almost every race with at least a placing. The strategy changes depending on if you are falling behind or not. I've never won one yet, usually the first two or few placers get a free ride to the "big one" a week before the Super bowl. Its tough for spot players like myself, i have not been able to break through the top 5 yet but i've won money in them once in a while. I just want the free ride once, thats why i play them sometimes.

Having seen some of the filming and knowing who they were following around I can guarantee you one of the characters is a complete jerk. Although he may have been such a jerk they dropped him completely as I didn't see him appear in the promo spot.

The "contest" format seems to be the wave in television. Look at the "cooking channel" and the "food network". They don't even teach you how to boil water. Used to have more informative shows. Now most of what they show are boring and meaningless contests. Hopefully this show's contest won't be as unentertaining.

After I posted that, I realized my error. PoI is CBS number one rated weeknight prime time show...Ouch!
The only consolation is most network prime time shows are in repeats up to after the Super Bowl which starts the February Sweeps...
In fact, PoI is in hiatus now. Last nights show was a cliffhanger. So maybe Horseplayer will see a little ratings bump. I'm thinking the male 25-54 demographic is the target audience. In any event, I will give it a shot. Hopefully it will get a decent audience.
Fortunately, most folks have dvr's where they can record one channel while watching another.....

I stand corrected. Po I is number one in the 18-49 demo in it's time slot and # 3 over all( all networks)...
NCIS( original) drew a 9 share ( 19.4 million tv households)last night. Then NBC's "The Voice" with an 11 share 14.01 million. NCIS-LA 7/15.2 million then PoI....6/12.4 #1 in the 10PM Eastern slot

I love, both, PoI and NCIS. I never miss them, but had to miss last night's episode of NCIS, and I'm sorry as I understand it was very good, though I still miss Zeva. CBS had a bit of the ending on its website today. I watch so little tv aside from some of Sunday's NFL games, but these two shows, along with James Spader, who is incredible in the "Blacklist"... all are great dramas. Spader as the main character, "Red" is mind boggling. So good.

"Horseplayers" is gonna have to go a long way to exceed Reese, Finch, Shaw and Fusco. And, Gibbs & Co, of course. ...Now, as far as comedy, "Two Broke Girls" is hilarious.
