Here's another link to the story:

He was 81.

Commonly cited as one of the best performers never to have won an acting Academy Award (despite having been nominated eight times).

Great actor. If you haven't seen the long version of Lawrence of Arabia in true Hi Def you should. It's stunning.

Great movie but I've never seen the hi quality version though, for whatever reason. Tomorrow I'll get my chance when the Netflix blue ray arrives. I thought O'Toole was incedible in LoA. He was great actor and always came across as a true gentlemen in interviews.

The Blu-ray edition released about a year ago is a must have as far as I'm concerned: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Lawrence-of-Arabia-Blu-ray/52492/

If I can find the forum thread which discusses the extreme measures taken to digitize and recover footage, I'll post it. ATM I'm not finding it.

P.S. Post #17 has some of the specifics: http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=191019 . However, the thread I'm looking for has input for a person that actually worked on the project.

I expect TCM to air a sequence of O'Toole films in the near future. Perhaps as a part of the annual 30 Days of Oscars feature.
