Hey anyone out there want to start a trivia thread. The rules are simple I ask a question like "What jockey has the most breeders cup wins?" You have to have a link that supports your answer and if it is correct the first person who answered the question correctly can then ask a question.

The questions can't be so stinking hard that no one will know. When it comes to answering a question you have to wait for the person who asked the question to review your answer. They have to say your answer is correct. Only one response per question. If a question has multiple answers the person must give all answers.

Okay lets start.

Question: Name a horse who is a third generation Preakness Stakes winner?

Question: Name a horse who is a third generation Preakness Stakes winner?

http://www.horse-races.net/library/preak-winners.htm

Risen Star (1988), by Secretariat (1973), by Bold Ruler (1957)

I'd prefer to leave the next question to someone else, if I may.

That is the right answer.

Okay now that I think about it I am officially killing this thread.

The internet takes most of the challenge out of trivia questions (assuming that you're allowed to use a computer to answer them).

I took an American Foreign Policy course back in college in the early 1970's. The professor handed out the final exam on the first day of the class, to be turned in on the last day. Part of it consisted of a list of twenty obscure terms (such as "X's article" or "EOKA-B (Davies)") related to the history of the subject that each student had to identify and write a brief synopsis of. Everyone thought that the list was extraordinarily difficult (and it was, at that time), and most of us spent almost the entire semester researching it, but with Google, it would have been just a couple hours of work.

I was going to use this in a giveaway... on a Cigar Piece I made. But it got step on. I thought it was a cool trivia question.

Three Degrees Of Cigar.

Cigar won 16 consecutive races from 1994-1996.
Tying 1948 Triple Crown Winner Citation's 16 in a row 1948-1950,
that established the modern-day record at the time.
Citation also held the modern-day record for most wins in a single year at 19 races.

Name the horse that Eclipsed Citation's and Cigar's 16.
That holds the record for consecutive races won.
And tied the single year win record at 19.

The name of the horse is?

Yes, and it was Philly Park by then, almost positive about that. He also still won. Went from 1st, to last, to 1st. He also ran in all those races in about a month, something you rarely see today in top class racing.

Just sick that way.

Really into racing back then. Years ago read a pretty good book by Carol Flake, 'Tarnished Crown' on CC's career.

Read this one a few years ago,

Name a horse/colt who won the same Major/Grade I dirt stakes race that his sire and dam also won?

I assume in North American dirt races this is the only time this has ever happened. A hint, this happened pre race grading, race was listed as a grade one when initially graded.

Yes. I was there. The next day I read an article about the race. The writer made a funny. He wrote something to the effect that Broad Brush decided to stop and have a chat with the rail birds before rejoining the field to go on for the win...

Me and a couple of buddies have no life, so when football is on and drinks are flowing the Cliff Claven trivia starts rolling out.

Some of it gets pretty insane

I'll give you three relative toughies to see who really knows how to research
A local one for me, a Breeders Cup one, and a track knowledge one
1. The Assiniboia Downs track record for 5 1/2 is held by Sunny Famous, who held the record prior to him? (Hint set in the 1980's)
2. The Breeders Cup is a national and international event
Name the states that have foaled at least 1 with less than 3 Breeders Cup starters
Hint there are 6
3. The most common stretch distance is 990 feet in North America. It's too easy to find the modern tracks at that distance.
There were 16 tracks in NA with a 990 foot stretch in 1985, how many can you name? (Hint 11 are still in operation)

Trivia tribute
a poem by Charles Bukowski

40,000

Father's Day,

at the track today,
Father's Day,
each paid admission was
entitled to a wallet
and each contained a
little surprise.
most of the men seemed
between 30 and 55,
going to fat,
many of them in walking
shorts,
they had gone stale in
life,
flattened out....
in fact, damn it, they
aren't even worth writing
about!
why am I doing
this?
these don't even
deserve a death bed,
these little walking
whales,
only there are so
many of
them,
in the urinals,
in the food lines,
they have managed to
survive
in a most limited
sense
but when you see
so many of them
like that,
there and not there,
breathing, farting,
commenting,
waiting for a thunder
that will not arrive,
waiting for the charging
white horse of
Glory,
waiting for the lovely
female that is not
there,
waiting to WIN,
waiting for the great
dream to
engulf them
but they do nothing,
they clomp in their
sandals,
gnaw at hot dogs
dog style,
gulping at the
meat,
they complain about
losing,
blame the jocks,
drink green
beer,
the parking lot is
jammed with their
unpaid for
cars,
the jocks mount
again for another
race,
the men press
toward the betting
windows
mesmerized,
fathers and non-fathers
Monday is waiting
for them,
this is the last
big lark.
and the horses are
totally
beautiful.
it is shocking how
beautiful they
are
at that time,
at that place,
their life shines
through;
miracles happen,
even in
hell.
I decide to stay for
one more
race.

When is the last time the Meadowlands ran a dirt race? Hard to say its still in use.
Yeah, I was a bit shaky including that one.
We can delete it to make it 'official'.
Kind of a shame.
In the early days, that meeting was 100 days.
Ran from Labor Day to just before Christmas.
Had several stakes that over time earned graded status.
Saw some great horses there.
Breeders Cup killed that track's stakes program.

It was at least his 3rd. He broke his maiden on dirt in a very good race, but then was put on turf for some reason. He then won the allowance on dirt before the NYRA Mile.

Funny how you remember things like that. I remember I absolutely loved Skip Away in the Blue Grass, and remember the day well at Laurel with my brother and father. We were all happy that day. It think he was 9-2, and pretty sure the exacta with Louis Quatorze came back much bigger than expected for the odds.

Grindstone was beaten that day in LA by Zarb's Magic as well, and came back to take the Derby.

Thanks for answering that so emphatically Sharp Cat. To tell the truth, I wasn't 100% sure that I was right on that, but I thought I'd take a chance that I was.

A lot of people get surprised by that when it's mentioned. I guess because Street Sense was a BC Juvenile and Kentucky Derby winner who's career was virtually over before Zenyatta ever raced. It's hard somehow to see them as being from the same crop.

Anyway, thanks again for confirming what I was pretty sure was right.

As I remember(!) Vigors was a decent turfer before rain caused the San Marcos to come off the grass. He turned out to be a top class dirt performer with pushbutton acceleration and his performance in the Big Cap (1978?) was amazing. I did not know that he had died until I saw his grave when visiting Jonabell in the mid-90s.

Derby Trivia- What Sire line is the only one to produce 3 successive generations of Derby winners. Sire- Grandsire- Great Grandsire?

This question really intrigued me. There's no pretending that I knew this without looking it up, so no gold star for me.

The only 3 generations of Derby winners I could find started with Reigh Count (1928 Derby) who sired Count Fleet (1943 Derby) who sired Count Turf (1951 Derby). The sire of Reigh Count was a stallion named Sunreigh....it takes 6 generations back tail-male from there to find a name that I'm even remotely familiar with....Voltigeur.

I didn't count them, but my guess is that there's probably about 6 Derby winners who have sired Derby winners (that's just a guess), but this was the only instance I could find of 3 generations of Derby winners.

Is there another that I missed?

Fair Hill 4th saturday in May.

Not the place I had in mind. Not sure, but I think I have seen Fair Hill PPs in the DRF before.

Name this North American racing venue that holds a single day of unsanctioned, pari-mutuel thoroughbred racing each year. Bonus question: Name the date held each year. Unsanctioned means the races from this venue are not recognized by the DRF and thus no PPs will show up in print, nor will their charts be recorded by equibase.

...

Additional clarifications: These were Flat races (i.e. no jump/steeplechase) and no hunt meets. Date held = particular time of year, and not necessarily same "date".

Was going to say Ocala Training Center, but I guess it's "sanctioned," and it's a different day each year (usually late winter).

OTC is also non-betting. They have talked about changing it, and it they do, it will promptly be added to my visit list. :)

My first thought was Van Wert County Fair on Labor Day, but then I figured, there could be many fair events that fit that description.

So my next guess is the Aiken (SC) Trials.

We have a winner!! Van Wert County fair is it.

They run harness races during that week, but then have a flats racing day each Labor Day Monday. I'm not aware of any other fairs that meet the trivia criteria, particularly with the "pari-mutuel" wagering requirement. Some places have something called calcutta/auction bidding, but I have never quite understood how that works. To date regarding all those jump meets like Aiken, is seems only Fair Hill his pari-mutuel wagering.

Van Wert was an interesting wagering proposition. The racing program consisted of important information like horse's name, race number and distance, owner's name, and trainer's name. No statistics and past performance running lines, but you could watch the tote board.:D After the racing had already begun, a scratch reduced a field in one race from 4 horses to 3. No problem........they simply replaced it with a horse from a not run race originally scheduled to have 6 horses to balance things out. Because the track was normally used for harness races, the thoroughbred races had an inside rail consisting of pylons. This particular racing day included an exhibition chuckwagon race.

A neat and unique experience nonetheless. I ended the day on the plus side, but it was certainly due to luck more than anything else.

Darn those OH residents....I though this trivia question would be a stumper.

WOW. How did I miss that OTC had wagering on live races?

Is this the first year they have done so? After looking at the Equibase charts it looks like wagering was only allowed on races 1 and 2 (out of 5 scheduled races). This looks kind of odd. Why not allow it on all 5 races?

I know OTC was looking at the possibility of a longer meet with pari-mutuel wagering. Any progress/plans for that still in process?

:jump: :jump:

So, Mr. Collector, you really think Van Wert is unique? It certainly is around here; is it the one-day part of it that makes it so? I know some people who participate in it, and they enjoy it: exercise riders, fringe jockeys, some trainers who can skip Labor Day at River or Indiana...And people come out of the woodwork to attend it. I've never witnessed it myself. I was able to attend some harness fairs last year (one was Darke Co., a biggie), and the local support was surprising.

Not to misdirect the thread too much, but when people talk (or more likely, post) about contraction, I wonder if they think much about the horses and their people that will be in the game at those lower levels. Racing horses will always exist at some level. I know about bush tracks in La, TX, Ga... and I saw fairs in Arizona 25 years ago...I'm sure they exist many other places. And people come out and bet on them, live. "Income inequality" has always been part of the game, always will, I suppose. But the egalitarianism evident is horse racing has always been a plus factor for me, and why I usually advocate for the smaller venues around here.

Back to trivia.....

I believe this is the second year that limited wagering was available. It's done to meet state requirements to keep their license going. Nothing material in the wind that I know of to run a meeting there, but there are always rumors.

The turnout for the live races this year was quite impressive.

Incidentally, mangement in the office at the ITW is changing hands again. Too soon to tell if it's for the better (or bettor!).

Ignore this if it has already been asked. I looked through several of these trivia pages and didn't see it.

Beholder won the 2013 Eclipse Award for 3-year-old female. She also won the 2012 Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old filly. If she wins an award this year, 2014, she will have been only the second female, and the seventh horse overall, to win a year-end title at two, three and four.

Who are the other six(one female, five males)?

If you only have one, that's OK. Let's hear it.

Cicada was the only filly to be name champion in her 2, 3, and 4 year old year. When she won champion older mare it was actually called "Champion Female Handicap Horse" or "Champion Handicap Mare" which was open to any female horse. There were a few mares that won champion at two and three and also champion handicap mare at three but I believe Cicada was the only one that had progressive awards from two to four. You gotta typo Grits its Seattle Slew.

This stuff is easily found. The TC winners I felt pretty sure about, the others I had to search. ;)

The Daily Racing Form version was open to any horse, three years old and up and this award was given to some Champions at the age of three, such as Citation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citation_%28horse%29), Buckpasser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckpasser), Damascus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus_%28horse%29) and Arts and Letters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arts_and_Letters). The Daily Racing Form, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations, and the National Turf Writers Association (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Turf_Writers_Association) all joined forces in 1971 to create the Eclipse Award.

Without googling, im going to guess Hialeah?

Hialeah was only down for something like 10 years. Thoroughbreds last raced there I believe in 2001. I can remember whether this is the 2nd or 3rd year they have been running QH races. Their current racing license allows them to run a 50/50 split of QH and TB races, but of course they would have to work something out with Gulfstream Park and Calder in order to have any chance of success.

Who were the finalists for champion 2 year old filly in 1974?
The finalists for champion 2 year old colt in 1974?
The finalists for champion 3 year old filly in 1975?
The finalists for champion 3 year old colt in 1975?
If possible I would like to see how many votes each horse got.

Good Job andtheyreoff!!

The one season in 2001 allowed me to get Brockton on my visit list. They are still kicking around the idea of running again, but currently they are looking at harness racing, and it would be contingent upon securing a gaming license.
