It's natural to assume that he's jest spending holiday time with his family.
The BIG stakes are over and overnights are in fad.

John has three daughters and and some grandkids.
His parents and his wife's parents are still living and it's a good time to spend with family.

Besides the weather is presently a bit crappy in the east ;)
