At aqu there were 2 (new to me) comments in the comment line. That were
cut corner and protective hold. The horse can't go over the pylons as in harness racing so what does cut the corner mean. Same for protective hold.

i don't know what a protective hold is, but cut the corner means the horse is just finished with the far turn, enters the stretch on the inside of the track, and once he straightens out the horse goes into a higher gear and tries to open up on his competition.

"Cut corner" seems to be a euphamism the chart callers fairly recently started using for any horse that essentially saves ground on the turn and stays on the rail as they go into the stretch. It usually seems to refer to also rans, but I suppose it could refer to a horse in front.

The prior post is incorrect.

Maybe my problem is I actually do understand English. What you said is complete jibberish. Nothing surprising.

This seems pretty straight forward. The jockey is saving ground around the far turn with a cautious hold on the horse (in case of being cut off while waiting for a big enough hole to go through).

The best way to figure it out though is to watch the replay.

When I first saw this term, I thought about me driving a car and I use to cut
corners. I since corrected myself as it was a wrong move. On making a turn
I would turn too soon and "cut the corner". It was okay as long as another
car was not pulling up to the stop sign. Dangerous if there was. So I felt
like a horse cuts the corner too soon and as long as no horse is next to him
he makes it okay but it could be a bad trait that needs to be corrected. But
it's just a guess on my part.
