I am watching an installment of Independent Lens that I had saved on my DVR.
It's about the Indian Relays, a series of horse races I never knew existed.

Fields of up to eight riders compete by going three laps on a 5/8m track, each on a different horse. After lap one the jocks dismount and then hop on their next horse and off they go; repeat after lap two with a different horse.
There is a sort of pit stop/staging area at the outside rail near the finish, with each team sort of jockeying for position based on the current running order...madness.
Three guys are in the pit crew;
The mugger, who catches the dismounted horse, another who holds the next runner in place (they may not help the jock mount the horse), and another who holds the third horse.

Start of the race is "steeplechase" walk up style. All jocks ride without saddle or stirrups, but carry a small crop of some sort.
Pretty cool stuff - check it out on the Google or the YouTube

They had some of these at Canterbury this year, but I didn't get a chance to see them.

I used to announce those at Sandy Downs!
