N.J. casinos set to take bets online today as internet gambling test begins

ATLANTIC CITY — New Jersey will allow casinos to take their first bets over the internet today, less than nine months after Gov. Chris Christie signed internet gambling into law.

At 6 p.m., several casinos are expected to commence a five-day test of online gambling. In a sign of how down-to-the-wire preparations for the launch have become, regulators do not plan to announce which casinos will be allowed to participate until this morning.

The test will only be available to invited players. But if all goes well, the state on Tuesday will give permission to open up the websites — which will host everything from poker to blackjack to slot machines — to everyone who can legally gamble in New Jersey.

Must admit I got a little nervous when I saw the title of this thread. :)

I won't be signing up to play. I like playing craps and blackjack but inside the casino at the table. Playing some kind of computer version that is programmed to pay out a percentage of wagers seems too much like playing the slots.

Besides, I'm a horseplayer first and foremost.

I think it's a smart move on NJ's part. IMO, Atlantic City is a lost cause and the state needed to do something to stem the tide of gambling dollars flying out the door.

I've said before that the Racino model is obsolete, as there's no reason these games can't be played online. In fact, I just saw a woman on a bus playing slots on her IPhone. That's the future of gambling.
